New aggressive DE

Afternoon all,

I have been DE shaving for some six months now. I have been using the EJ89 and have been pleased with the results after a 3 shave pass.

Working shifts means I get a set of 4 days off where I tend to give my face a rest from the daily shave. This is where I feel that the EJ89 struggles as I have strong growth in all directions.

What I'm after is a razor that can handle the initial shave after 4 days growth but not a hugely aggressive razor as I have sensitive skin. Something with a bit more grunt than the EJ89.

Thanks all

+ 1 on the Mhule R41 with a blade that you get along with now. Some may say it is an agressive razor, I would disagree but YMMV! :)

Fatip open comb, piccolo or grande, same head different handle.
I've heard it described as smoother & more forgiving than an R41.
Don't have an R41, but, do have very sensitive skin (& steel wool for a beard).
Fatip grande is a lovely shaver, it will smirk at 4 days growth & give a BBS result
In 3 passes no problems.

Another good one is the merkur 39c, it feels as mild & comfortable as a DE89 during the shave.
However, it's unstoppable, very rarely need any touch-ups,
You might find, like myself, a more aggressive shaver reduces the chance of irritation.

The R41 is a hugely aggressive razor.
I'd suggest an adjustable like the Merkur Progress - just dial in the aggressiveness. You could use it for every shave just change the settings as required. Very nice shaver.
You could also get a Rockwell 4S (bit expensive though at around £100) where you can choose the baseplate to suit you.

why not an adjustable? You can go vintage or new.
This is the perfect solution to your needs , if you want change the characteristics of the razor. Increase the aggressiveness when you need at the turn of the button.
However I would suggest the EJ89 is perfectly capable of dealing with 4 days growth. Just do 2 WTG passes to start with. The basic principle of DE shaving is gradual stubble reduction. Good preparation, correct blade angle and a keen blade, like the Astra SP, are the aspects to avoiding razor burn. Always finish with a moisturiser though.
Finally, might I suggest that your face does not need a 4 day rest and you can shave daily, even if it is a 1 or 2 pass shave.

I reckon he gives his face a 4 day rest because he couldn't be bothered to shave during those 4 days. If you have to shave for work, you tend to not bother when you're off. I reckon he's a Fireman. :)

I've heard lots of scare stories about the R41. I would definitely want to try before buying because I like a nice easy shave and would not want to be worrying about cutting myself all the time. I have heard good things about the Fatip.

It isn't as bad as all that, I've used one without issue for a long time, you can cut yourself on a peice of paper if not handled properly. :)

...lots of good recommendations here...for me the Merkur Slant, Fatip OC and R41 are all great shavers with their own characteristics; the R41 will give you the deepest shave followed by the Fatip then the Merkur. You may want to consider the Razorock 37 Slant as an inexpensive next step. It is a clone of the Merkur slant and you can purchase the head only which will fit your EJ89 handle. It will comfortably handle 4 days growth...

I've used the Muhle R41 and the Fatip piccolo.

I've just sold the R41 as I struggled to get a smooth shave from it. I tried different blades and adjusted my angle but I just couldn't get on with it. I'd say it's the closest shave I've had so far but I don't think the idea is to shave your face off!

:eek::p

The Fatip on the other hand is a joy to use. It works with every blade I've tried so far, is extremely smooth and ultra-efficient. I'd put it on par with my ATT S2 and (that's) a £160.00 razor.

The only negative is the handle, it's cheap looking and too thin to hold (for me). You can buy the Grande version which has a larger handle. I use the ATT Atlas or Kronos handles and I love using it.

For the money the Fatip is an absolute steel. Highly recommended.

PS. It will mow down 4 days growth no problem.
