12 shaves in - my thoughts

Hello people

Even though I'm fast approaching 50 years young, I've just had my 12th DE shave.

Why didn't I do it years ago I keep asking myself?

I can't believe the warm welcome, help & advice & some freebies from you great people.

I'm enjoying using different soaps, creams & blades. It goes to show that what is good for one person is not necessarily good for the other, Voskhod blades for example

I was a bit sceptical/scared, but nothing to be scared about. I've had less cuts/soreness than the 4 blade things. What was once a chore, is now a pleasure, maybe even a hobby.

What I initially thought was going to save me money has infact done the bloody opposite. After I've put my OSP order in then that'll be it for a while. The only thing I can see me purchasing in the near future is an adjustable razor...but which one

Thanks to those who have gone out of their way to help.

Personally I'd leave the traditional adjustable and go for the Rockwell in any of it's guises. The C is nice and not as expensive as the SS model which is still phenomenal value. I really rate it. Great razor.

Cheers, do you use a C? Forgive my ignorance newbie question do you mean a 6c? Any uk suppliers?

Yes That is the one. Sorry my fault. I think Executive shaving may have the 6S not sure about the C yet though, I think it is around the £95 for the S model minus any forum related discount

Cheers, I'll look into it, prob an Xmas pressie as I'm skint. Was looking at the cheaper Merkur but I don't like the plastic dial

I am a fairly newbie too and have recently purchased the Merkur Progress. I honestly don't notice the plastic dial. What I do realise is what a good razor it is. Yet to dial it up past 3 yet but will be heading there in the next few weeks possible. Had some of my best shaves ever with this razor.

@shaunwistow - I have no experience of the Rockwell razor - although they have caught my eye - and get very good reviews. I would second previous comments about trying a Progress. Easily available and it works extremely well for me. After a Merkur slant - it was the first 'proper' razor I bought. It's still in my rotation to this day. Solid and excellent. Most importantly it shaves very well. The design has been unchanged for decades - there's a reason for that. I wouldn't get hung up on the adjustment knob being an odd yellow plastic thing - it functions just fine. I was intrigued by the recent Parker Variant - but they seem to be sold out in the UK. Failing that you will need to dip your toe into - massively overpriced - vintage Gillettes. Hope this helps. I.

The plastic dial is not something that concerns me and I am used to it now. More importantly, the razor is a great shaver. I hear good things about the Parker Variant which should be back in stock in a few months.

+ 1 on the Merkur Slant..i purchased one this year..a amazing razor..very efficient..at first i was slightly scared of her, but i've showed her some respect, as i do with all my razors and been rewarded with some sublime shaves..I only started DE shaving in 2016, and i can't believe how so much better and enjoyable it is..as before i hated shaving with a passion..now i enjoy and hopefully keep enjoying my new shaving experience.
