Used lapping film for 1st time

Agree, nice job. I have a big old granite tile, but no lapping film yet, it's been used to put wet and dry on to lap my stones so far!

Thanks. It is a little rough now, but I would burn out a half dozen dremels trying to clean the edges up. I had no idea how hard that stuff was going to be. It took forever to cut. That is also why it has the little BL (bottom left) marking on it. It is the only square corner on the whole thing. [emoji12]

Ha, sounds like a fun challenge. Why did you go for this material over something like the granite?

Yes I've heard very good things about the film. I may still be buying some stone, I haven't completely decided... not that I'm in a rush. I've had all of my razors professionally honed so far. To understand what a truly sharp edge should feel like so I know what I'm aiming for when/if I start honing my own!

I was getting a key cut at the hardware store and saw a chunk of it there. So I had one of those "cartoon bubble", lightbulb ideas and went for it. It would have been easier to cut a piece of tile. [emoji1]

The film is a life saver for guys without a lot of stones. I have been using it for a final finish, but I want to take one up all the way once to see how it goes.
Lapping Film is a Modern Synthetic System that Performs Well..It Performs Particularly Well as a High Grit Finisher..Once the Bevel Stage & Progression Stage has Been Mastered the Finishing Stage Can be an Area of Study & Learning in its Own Right..:)

So I have a question if you don't mind. I like SHARP. I like the forgiveness of straights, but still haven't tried an edge that I like as much as an AC blade in a shavette.

I have been doing the laps on 1 micron like we talked earlier, but then have started doing 15 or so on .3. This has put them very close to what I hope for. This has been on everything from blades I did myself to blades that I have sent out to a couple well known honers.

I need to buy a serious finisher. What are some you would recommend? I have considered a Black from Dan's, and have been curious about Shaptons. I have not yet tried an edge finished on a Naniwa 12K that I have been overly satisfied with. I also don't want to spend a small fortune on some exotic natural, but I kind of just like the idea of honing on real rocks.

The only stones I have right now are a 1/6 King and a set of the 3 Welsh Slates. I don't expect to be doing many (if any) difficult blades. I can get by with these and film for now, but I want a finer finisher than what I have, and the prepper in me doesn't like relying on buying film.

Thanks Billy.

My Knowledge of Natural Finishers is Limited to the Arkansas & Escher Thuri..I have Only Recently Got into Natural Finishers..Both these Stones are Great Natural Finishers..The Escher Thuri I have is a Step Up from a Naniwa 12 Super Stone in Terms of Sharpness & Also Mellower on the Face..At a Guess I Would Suggest My Escher Thuri has around a 15 k Finishing Capacity..:)

My Escher Thuri is Also a Fast Cutter & as Easy & Quick to Use as a Naniwa 12 K Super Stone..My Arkie Surgical Black is a Very Slow Cutter & Without Doubt has a 20 K or 20 K + Finishing Capacity..I Have Found Both these Natural Stones to have around a 99 % Dialled In 1st Hit after Coming Off the Hone..o_O

My Surgical Black is the Most Dynamic Stone in My Books..It has a Wider Grit Rating..8 k to 20 K..It Seems to Perform Well with any Steel I have Hit it with..The Cherry on the Cake is that its a Beautiful & Creative Stone to Use if Perhaps Not a Great Choice for the Professional Honer Due to Time Constraint's..:D

Thanks a ton. Slow doesn't matter too much to me since it is a one at a time type thing, and just something to do after supper anyway. [emoji1]

I Average about 20 Min to Finish on an Arkie..Not Fast by any Means but Not as Slow as Some make them Out to Be..One thing is Clear in My Mind about an Arkie Finisher..Its Showing the Holes in the Honing Skills of the Guys that Cant get it to Work for them..Big Time..;)

The Arkie Wont Forgive or Forget any Mistakes Made in the Progression..I Personally Wouldn't Recommend it to a New Person for that Same Reason & Due to the Fact that it Takes the Utmost Focus to get the Very Best from it..:D
