Help needed on honing stone selection

Can someone point me in the right direction for honing stone set-up please. There are numerous guides out there, many differing from each other.
Do i really need a 1k stone from the outset if a razor is shave ready?. Should i get an 6k or 8k stone? Do i use a 2k stone to sharpen the razor?
The set up i have in mind would be Shapton glass 1k/2k then 6k with a finishing stone.....or is there too much of a bridging gap between the 1k/2k and the 6k stones? Any advice would be so much apreciated, thanks all

With razor honing, setting the bevel is the Most important part so I would say get a 1K bevel setting stone. I usually use Naniwas and my honing process is: 1K-5K-8K and 12K. I don't have a 3K for between 1 and 5 but would be better if I did so as a 10K between 8 and 12K but not necessary. Also after 8K sometimes I finish them on Coticule and Thüringen or Charnley Forest. Sometimes Green and Black pasted pedal strop.
If you buy a decent 1K and set the bevel nicely and get another one to use between your Finisher, you will be ok. In my opinion.

thanks for help on this , very much appreciated.... i aim to get the shapton 1k (heard excellent reports about it). should i get the 6k or 8k shapton? would that be too much of a bridge between the stones?....

I've heard very good things about Shapton stones but I have no experience, I use Naniwas which are much cheaper then Shaptons. After 1K I would say 6K would be better then 8K, also I've heard that some companies produce combination stones like Norton 4k and 8K combi stone that are bonded each other, these are cheaper than buying 2 stones. So if you can get a 1K shapton for bevel setting and get a combi stone to use between the bevel and finishing stones.
Why not contact Jamie aka @pugh-the-special-one He is a professional in this field and has a great experience and knowledge about the Whole Honing process and can suggest the best places to buy the stones.
So I would say, instead of buying a 6K or 8K shapton I guess you can buy a combination stone like 5&8K or something like that for a price of single shapton stone.

You Asked if You Need All those Stones to Begin with if You have a Shave Ready SR..Well..To Answer that Question Directly..The Answer is No..All You Need to Maintain a Shave Ready SR is a Naniwa 12 K Super Stone for You're 1st Port of Call Refresh Hone..A 12 K Naniwa Stone & Pastes Could Keep a Shave Ready SR Up & Running for a Couple of Years or So Depending on Use..;)

If You are Looking for a Complete Progression that's Another Story..A Full Naniwa Super Stone Progression is Not that Expensive..That Would Look Like Mine Maybe...1 K, 3 K 5 K 8 K 12 K Although Some Don't Use the 3 K..Any Synthetic Progression You Choose Shapton or Naniwa or Otherwise is Going to Look Something like that..o_O

On the Subject of a Bevel Hone the Naniwa 1 K Professional Stone is the Preferred Bevel Stone By Many..That About Sums it Up So it Does..:D

thank you both for the excellent advice...with the money i can save on stones i can get a really good razor, i have my eye on one at the moment. So my first port of call in the 12k finishing stone...then i can always add stones if and when i need them.
thanks again people i have actually learned more from this advice than most advice out there at the moment.

That's Good..The 1st Port of Call is a Shave Ready SR & Strop..Learn to Shave & Strop..2nd Port of Call by Many is Pastes on a Pasted Strop or Otherwise..3rd Port of Call Would be a 12 K Stone for Refresh Jobs & Off You Go..o_O

Then You Can Add Stones as You Need them Yeah..Working Back the Way if You Want..So the 12 K Stops Working & Up Pops the 8 K Stone..The Set Up Thus Far will Keep an SR Going for Years Probably..:D

Experience... don't get too 'stone heavy'. Stick to synthetics, recommend a combo, Norton 4K/8k. That's it and a pasted cotton webbing strop and you have all you'll need.
( ok a good handheld 'barber hone' too, but study before you buy).

I appreciate you get what you pay for, but alas the Naniwa is out of my price league....for now
