Annual Shaving Room Awards

My thoughts for what their worth :)

I would like to see an annual award/vote, as this would help to promote good shaving i.e. seeing what's out there, as for me there is always something new to learn.

I like the idea of an award/vote to promote/thank/acknowledge innovation and excellent product service - some of the new SE/GEM razors this year have been truly excellent, in terms of design and performance.

It would also be good to celebrate those who take a business risk, in terms of stocking and supplying goods. For me, this year, hats off to Connaught Shaving, for stocking the Supply-SE (v1.0 and 2.0) as these are great razors, I appreciate YMMV, and locally to Iain in the Gentleman's Groom Room, Dundee, not only for his advice and help, but for the excellent range of products that he stocks, notably for managing to get his hands on the Muhle Rocca at the start of the year, along with the Wickham Soap Co. 1912 Citrus Musk Shaving Soap, not least his own range of home grown soaps and his Pre-shave prep +.

In terms of the many excellent posts here, could we have a shave of the day photo of the month vote, or even photograph of the year. The work that must go into the photographs is excellent, as is seeing new things and new combinations.

I also like the idea of metaphor/simile of the year - I nearly pissed my self laughing, when the dolphin smooth banter started, earlier this year.

There is much to celebrate and be thankful for.

All the best.

Chris
Great post mate......A category for Best "bricks and mortar" Shop is in the plans, so Iain can be nominated in there,...even non-winners get valuable exposure just by being nominated.
Phots etc could be voted for in a Chatters Awards

Will it be acceptable to leave a section blank if you feel it can not be answered fairly? @Far Cry Toff
Of course Paul,....although I find it hard to quantify the value of not voting
For example,...if you couldn't choose between your three favourite SE's,..leaving the category blank would mean that none of them get the credit that they deserve and they could be beaten in the poll by people voting for cheap Chinese copies because they don't know any better.

So far some very good suggestions.

The only thing I would add is that candidates where they are a product should be in current production and obtainable for retail customers (unless a vintage category is introduced specifically). No point promoting expensive unobtainium
So you would exclude Old Spice shave soap,....1912 razors, Fatboys, Slims and Schicks from the lists of All-time favourites?....

Purely as a suggestion, in the interests of simplicity I would actually run with

Best razor - DE
Best razor - Other
Best brush
Best soap
Best cream
Best blade - DE
Best blade - Other

New product of the year
Retailer of the year
Manufacturer of the year
Best value item
Best vintage item

All except the latter should be currently available

Overseas Retailer?
Edit: I would like to see more than one category for "Best Vintage"

Here's my more 'sensible' contribution and a couple of questions too.

Keep the categories and sub-categories to a minimum.

‘Retailer of the Year'. This should cover both ‘bricks and mortar' and online retailers. As far as I know every bricks and mortar shop has an online store too. I think this would give the award have more gravitas too.

Favourite razor:
Is this award for razors only released this year? Or over the last couple of years? Or your favourite razor?
Favourite Brush: No sub-categories. Just one brush to rule them all.
Favourite Soft wear: One soap or one cream. Not both.

You get the gist....I was going to put in an 'Overated' category but I wouldn't know where to begin.:p

My suggested template would be:

.................Best New Product..............Favourite All-Time

DE Razor........ ATT Calyps.o.....................Gillette Fatboy
SE Razor......... General......................... Ever Ready 1912
DE Blade.............. N/A...........................Polsilver Lodz
SE Blade...........(Insert suitable)..............Gem
Soap................. P&B Oberon. ................. OSP Bay Rum
Cream...............BBA.............................. Arko sensitive :)
Pre Shave
Post shave
Splash
Brush
Shop(B&M)
Retailer
Overseas Retailer
Indispensable accessory
...others to be added
Value and budget items would be too arbitrary to calculate as cost to quantity ratios come into play unless a figure such as £10 is set and even then I could see some wiseguy saying he got a tin of SV Felce Aromatica from Superdrug for £9.99
I think a "Bricks and Mortar" category is important to highlight shops that we could visit around the country which would generate walk-in business for them as well as their online arm.
Best Overall product would be the one that gathered the most votes.
That's my two-pennorth so far.......
NB.....Suggestions in the nominations aren't necessarily my choices,...for example only.
