My Silicone Carbide Arrived Today..I Lapped My Recently Acquired Dark Blue Thuri with 80 Grit & 220 Grit Silicone Carbide..I then Lapped it with 350 Grit to 1000 Grit Wet n Dry..The 80 Grit Silicone Carbide Made Short Work of Taking the Chips Out of this Stone & the 220 Grit Silicone Carbide Took the Scratches Out in Jig Time..o_O

This Stone is Not the Hardest But Not the Softest Either..Took Me around 20 Minitues from Start to Finish & its as Cheap as Chips & a Wee Bag will Probably Last a Lifetime..Canny Whack it..This Stone is Uber Flat & Uber Smooth..Superb Stuff..:D:D

Billy
That Silicone Carbide stuff will Lapp any stone, as you quite rightly said , yer canny whack it, truly amazing. I love it when you weave a bit of your Scotish dialect into a sentence......yer canny whack that ether! :) P.

Nice to see a man passionate about his interests!!

What do you think about jnats?
I have Never Used Japanese Naturals to be Honest..I have Shaved from a Jnats Edge that I Got Specially Done for Me by a Well Respected & Capable HoneMeister in Sweden..I Shaved with it Straight from the Jnat..Un Pasted & then Pasted it & Shaved with it Again..Wasn't My Cuppa Tea Albeit the Shaving Edge was Very Nice..o_O

I have Also Shaved with a Couple of Other Japanese Natural Edges..They Provide a Nice Shaving Edge..The Few Japanese Natural Shaving Edges I have Tried were Akin to the Crispiness I Got from My Charnley Forest Natural..I Sold My Charnley Forest Cause I Am Not a Crispy Edge Kinda Lover..:)

But..Thats Just My Personal Judgement of Taste..Some Folks Like Japanese Natural Edges..:D:D

Very interesting!

A honemeister choosing a hone progression is something similar to what a barber goes through when choosing his own tools for the trade.

Its highly personal and evolves over time.

Bang On..Its Very Interesting How One Person Will Prefer One Tool Over Another..Firearms are the Same..One Soldier Prefers a Particular Tool or Set of Tools for the Job than Another..Even the Tools for Killing Folks Fall into a Judgement of Taste that Can Change Over Time..:)

On the Subject of Naturals..If I had Only One Natural to Keep it Would be a Nice Thuringian..Simply because its as Easy & Consistent to Use as a Synthetic & it Seems to Suit All Various Steels..And..Of Course its an Excellent 8 K to 16 K Finishing Stone..They are Fairly Cheap on UK EBay..:D

Haha:D I like how you used the analogy of killing utensils on that topic when straights can equally be used to expire a person.

Excellent I shall look up the Thuringian. It sounds very promising.

To be honest I have never honed a straight even though I had to start straight shaving at 17 and it's something I am seriously researching.

I have lapped a welsh slate honing stone using wet and dry, not sure what to expect, well flat of course after a lot of work but it also turned very smooth, velvety, glass-like, very different from the original finish.
Try Some 3 n 1 Type Oil on the Welsh Slate..Oil is the Dogs Bollocks for Finishing on a Welsh Slate..In My Experience in Capable Hands Oil on a Welsh Slate Can Pick Up the Finishing Capacity of the Stone BIG TIME & Offers a Far Sharper & Smoother Edge..The Difference for Me is Astounding..:D

Call me dumb, but why isn't anyone using diamond? I have a Lansky knife sharpener with diamond hones and it's the only thing that works on the new "super" steels in knives.
Believe it Or Not..The Likes of a Surgical Black Arkansas Stone will Tear a Diamond Plate Apart..Some Use a Lower Grit DMT for Resto Work on Razors & Lapping Stones..Some Use Diamond Sprays or Paste for Refining Edges..There is Also Diamond Lapping Film..I Personally Dont Recommend Diamond Sprays or Lapping Film for Higher Grit Work on Razor Blades..Its a Very Fast & Ruffer Cutter for Finer Work So to Speak in My Books..:D

That stuff really works well. I had a float-glass glass plate, which is perfectly flat, and it seemed to make a big difference when flattening my sharpening stones. Used the Wet n Dry sandpaper on the float glass plate also. At one time the Japanese sharping stones were considered the best.

Float glass used to be made by floating it on mercury, but with the restrictive environmental regulations the glass is made some other way now. It's totally flat.

Thought you might be interested this article about water stones. Most of the wood workers and turners I know used these stones to sharpen their high-carbon steel chisels and hand plane blades with them.

Highland Woodworking is probably the best source of wood working tools in the US. After I retired I worked Highland Working for 4 years. Many days wood workers and turners from all over the US would visit the store and I would like to have a nickel for every time one would come through the door and say "I feel like a kid in a candy store".
