Newbie saying hello to all.

Thanks for all the advice guys, most welcome. I'm assuming that the Merkur 34c would be a non aggressive shave so if when I get more experienced which razor would be a sensible upgrade? I also fancy getting myself a decent vintage Gillette to try but buying of EBay would be risky without being able to thoroughly examine the razor first.

For a razor I would look at a Parker Variant as you would be able to adjust the aggression to suit your skin. As for a brush, I would look at a synthetic as mentioned. I bought a Razorock and like it very much at about £18 from Shave Lounge. They are great to deal with. For a great soap at an affordable price, have a look at a Tabac shaving stick or bowl. Cheers David

I would advise against an adjustable for a newcomer as it generates another variable that is only likely to lead to confusion. New DE shavers are likely to experience shaves of variable quality for several weeks if not months until their technique becomes automatic muscle memory, and they need the consistency of a fixed blade gap and exposure to help them improve that technique.

Hi All,

Just an update to say that I purchased a Merkur 34c, Palmolive stick soap and a Wilkinson brush. Will be buying a selection of blades and probably a better brush, an Omega 49 possibly. Either way will be posting looking for advice, best place to buy and what products to buy. I'll try to post in the correct forum so please look out for it and any reccomendations gratefully accepted.

Cheers,
Bren.
Hi Bren,

Welcome. I started with a WS brush and went on to get an Omega 49 from Amazon (apologies) quite quickly. A nice choice.

I agree with you if Brenn was a complete novice but as I read it, he was talking about the future when he gets more experienced. And as a future purchase then I think it would be a good choice as that is what I did, but my first razor was a DE89. Cheers David

Hello there,
your purchase of the Merkur 34c, Palmolive stick soap and Wilkinson brush, will provide you with some sublime shaves, you don't have to spend a fortune to get a good shave, learn your technique, don't expect too much too soon, try a sample pack of assortment blades, you'll eventually find which are suited to your skin type, may i also recommend you get a tube of Aloe vera gel, if you have a bodycare shop in your area, it's only £1. this is wonderful for your post shave, and leaves your skin feeling smooth with no irritation, and doesn't break the bank.I'm on a budget,so i can't afford the more up market shaving products..the humble Palmolive classic shave stick is one of my favourites for it's price and performance it takes some beating IMHO...Dont add any pressure to the razor, let the weight of the razor & blade do the work you just have to guide it.
Last but not least, i've trained my mind to 'Shave the lather from my face, rather than the stubble', this has had great results with no irritation to my skin, most of all enjoy your new shaving experience. Regards.;)

Some excellent and much welcome advice there guys and I'm taking it all in. I chose the Merkur 34c as it seemed to be a very popular choice across all forums and I'm glad I chose it. My second choice would have been the Edwin Jagger DE89 and I'm wondering is there any major difference between the two razors making it worthwhile to own both?

Cheers,
Bren.

I have both Bren and the only reason being is that I was curious with regards to their difference.

To be honest with you they are very much the same. The Merkur I would say is more maneuverable than the DE89 as the handle is shorter and the Merkur is also heavier. Some folk would say that the DE89 would be their preferred choice and this is part of the reason why this hobby, addiction, call it what you will has many answers to the same question.
YMMV Your Miles May Vary as we say in this neck of the woods.

Both are superb razors and personally I would keep your hand in your pocket until you master the Merkur.
I would be more than happy to send you my DE89 at a later date for you to decide yourself.

Hope this helps,
Wayne. :)
