I will be honest I don't rate Damascus at all, I have dabbled with a couple of blanks from respected makers and it's just ok, in my opinion it does not take an...

    A straight Halloween style

Yeah I much prefer a smiling blade, the way I see it is that none of our faces are flat they all have curves in and out, and the smilers just seem to accommodate this, and the honing/stropping of them is relatively easy with a bit of practice.

    First time Straight user

I think the general consensus is that shavettes are generally more aggressive less refined, the disposable blades are run off the factory line very very sharp and rough, whereas proper straights are carefully ( hopefully) honed by hand then stropped on things like chromium oxide & linen/leather...

Best way to clean shaving brushes?

Yeah your right the number one killer of badger brushes is soap residue at the base of the hairs, it clings to the base of the hair and makes the hair brittle and fragile, the same thing happens in very hard water areas with calcium deposits, I just shampoo my badgers once a month and am all...

No business as usual, they don't affect the honing at all, I always use 1 layer of tape and don't even feel the hammer marks on the hone cheers Ed.

    Couple of finished razors...

Thanks, the rustic look as I call it not only looks great but it is very corrosion resistant as the metal is already covered in a coating of black magnetite (black oxide).

    A couple more brushes...

What's the benefit of the fan knot? I assume that it splays easier, it's one style that I have never tried.

Toolstation is the best place for wet/dry sandpaper sheets off the top of my head it's about £2.60 for 10 sheets in lots of grits.
