    Over stropped?

New to SR shaving myself but red paste is probably Ferric Oxide and can come in various particle sizes. Quite a soft abrasive so that number of passes should not have had that much effect but it seems your face does not suit red paste like mine is not fond of diamond loaded strops. Take a look...

    Leather Razor Pouches

Pouches look just great to me, leather does absorb moisture and causes steel stored inside to rust as I found out with chisel roll up leather storage. Suggest always treating your razors with Camellia oil before storing in pouches. Your strops look a lot better than mine I won't post any pics! I...

Moughton or Dalmore sharpening stones / hones

Agree with what Billy says unable to dress the yellow packet Salmen to the same fine finisher as the red packet. Salmen did market stones from all over the UK but have only found slates in that thinner packet and stone size. Probably worth a punt if you find one at a car boot you never know what...

Moughton or Dalmore sharpening stones / hones

Moughtons are a bit rare and go for a lot of money, Dalmore quarries produced a number of different stones. A Dalmore Blue and a Moughton are probably 4K tops if that when freshly dressed, I have a DB but have never used it on a razor. Slates are very variable and even those with the Yellow Lake...

    Honing

I ended up using a marker pen to see exactly where the edge was in relation to the spine, just a quick swipe on a dry stone revealed one side of the spine was convex and the other straight. Using a lower grit stone I do all the time on tools and knives but I worry about damaging the rather more...

    Honing

Glad you have the picture! Razor was rocking slightly on a freshly flattened hone RH side, I just used light finger pressure on the spine towards the toe razor flat on the stone. Repeated both sides, razor edge now cuts water nicely both bevels and the heel is coming in to line slowly. Get the...

    Honing

Thanks for the reply Billy. Spine wear looks biased towards the heel on both sides hence the heel is worn more than the toe I have only honed it with tape. More spine wear on the RH side heel end than the LH side so that could explain the toe problem. Will take it back to the stones gently and...

    Honing

Just when you think you are getting it you hit a razor that wont or somebody raises the bar even higher. So I have one where the bevel at the toe on the LH side is not contacting the stone going by visual inspection of the bevel and watching the water film, RH side is fine, one layer of tape...

    Freshly honed by a master

Like the way he tells the Guy to take good care of that gold wash and then wipes the razor on that same piece of tissue full of swarf and various grades of grit throughout the sharpening.

    First Straight

Nobody except forum members even know or care how I shave or what I use so exactly what bragging rights? An SR shave for me is something I enjoy, take my time over and get a better shave from. The areas I need to touch up with a DE are shrinking slowly and putting an old razor back in to use...

    First Straight

Thanks for your advice Billy always welcome. Don't have the cash for another stone at the present but the ones you mention would go on my shopping list. Trans Ark I have has a toxic part about a third of the way down so no use for an SR. Salmen slate is doing the job as a finisher and I will...

    First Straight

Nearly three weeks in and definitely liking the SR shave makes your skin feel better than any DE shave Carl Rader still hanging in there with just leather stropping. Might give it a taste of the 0.30 CrOx strop soon. Best of all I cleaned up and beveled a couple of ERN SRs I bought and got a...

Oil Stone Cleaning - how to?

Looks like a Charnley, nice find. Epoxy should hold it in place depending how oil soaked the box is, you could mix some plaster in with the epoxy to increase it's filling ability if the stone is a very loose fit. Pitch or plaster of paris used to be the traditional way.

    Yellow Lake Finishing Stone

I think Inigo Jones used to prepare these stones for Salmen back in the day so it might be worth calling them if you want a good cheap Welsh hone they call theirs Dragons Tongue, tell them it will be for razors. I do have one of the red box Yellow Lake stones plus another larger one in a totally...

    First Straight

My mistake Billy unable to find a Carl Rader with that insignia on Google so a golden oldie :) Now I need a new brush and some soap and start doing it properly. Was part of your stropping on this razor diamond paste?

    First Straight

First shave with the Carl Rader #38 6/8 SR supplied by Fergiebilly. As supplied the razor was nicely finished, scales have probably been replaced and the edge was hair popping sharp for it's full bevel, arm hair only with no skin contact. Prep was just as any other shave, two days of stubble...

    First Straight

Buying so called "Ready for use" edge tools for woodworking I know they are anything but and I doubt that a new razor advertised as such will be anything different. Kind of important that my first shave with a straight does not turn in to a bloodbath so get a razor that is truly ready to shave...

Razor on the way from Fergiebilly. I do strop my kitchen knives routinely after honing and as a touch up but they are a much less acute included angle than a razor.
