Closed 1914 AND 1924 SE Passaround

I have a soft-spot for the 1914, as you guys know. I see the queer top cap as like the reverse doors on classy vintage cars that you're always on the wrong side of because they open the wrong way, but it's still classy and you don't really mind ... because it's classy.

The 1924 has a fun cap - the fun is not letting the cap ping against the handle and mark it. Duh! Hold it by the handle, flick open and click-clunk closed. It also makes owning mint capped 1924s a real joy as everyone manages to launch the cap into the handle at least once.

I agree (but of course I would :D) ... it shows how good the mechanism on the 1912 is. It's the razor equivalent of the classic Zippo lighter: simple, functional, intuitive and tactile.

Current Gem Blades are Simply the Wrong blades for these SEs..:D

You're right, you're absolutely right but ... adopt, adapt, improve ... we can't eat caviar every day. Which reminds me, I have two mint Corrux blades in the wings, another Damaskeene, a really old Ever Ready (curved detailing on the spine) and a handful of Duridiums for fun with a Featherweight!

That's Funny you Mentioned a Zippo there cause my Brother & I were Blethering about them Today..We both agreed that they were Crud..:D

A Stark Warning from Royal Marine Survival Training Experts was..Never Trust a Zippo..

Ever-Rrady 1924 - Day one

Castle Forbes Lavender shaving cream
Omega Hi-Brush 46751
Ever-Ready 1924
GEM blade - shimmed (3)
Alum block
Indian Old Spice Fresh Lime ASL

Here are the blade pictures for the 1924:

Again, the Corrux stropping blade on the left is held securely, while the modern GEM barely hangs in there. Again I felt a shim was needed. It works like a wedge and props up the blade against the metal hook to hold it more securely and alter the angle ever so slightly.
I believe that shimming makes those SE razors almost boring. Put them flat on your face and they just work. That's boring in a good way. What's all that 30 degree DE nonsense about? Put the razor pretty much flat on your face and pull. I never got that without shimming, but shimmed, those 100 year old razor designs are just pure genius.
Not much to report about the shave. Easy peasy. WTG/XTG/GTX/ATG blah blah… Fast forward... BBS.
The 1924 luckily has the same thread on the handle as the 1912, so tomorrow I'll give it a go with a nice chunky modern stainless steel handle.
I can't figure it out. I love DE razors with the lightest of handles. The R41 head with an aluminium Tech handle was a revelation, but not what the designers intended. The 1912 with a heavy stainless steel handle was a revelation, but not what the designers intended. What's going on? I so want to try a Type I to O Schick injector head on a heavy handle, but alas...
Enough ramblings. Where's my Lagavulin?

Ever-Ready 1924 - Day two

Speick Men shaving cream
Omega 49 big boar
Ever-Ready 1924 head on 96mm stainless steel handle
GEM blade - shimmed (4)
Alum block
Speick Men ASL
Speick Men EdT
Speick Men ASB

The 1924 with the stainless steel handle is transformed into a formidable shaving machine. What bothers me is that I don't have a clue why. The 1912 and 1924 with the heavy handle feel more balanced than with the original handles. It's definitely not the weight that does it for me, as I love very light weight razors. My aluminium Tech, my bakelite Merkur 45, the pass around NeoGam and Trumpf slant weighed next to nothing and were fantastic. Why is it that those SE heads work so well with a heavy handle? No idea.
How was the shave? Brilliant. The first signs of stubble appear 10 hours later. Very good. The shave was close. Very close. But not as smooth as the shaves I get from the 1912. The 1924 is a tad more aggressive. The alum and ASL had quite a strong opinion.
I'm not sure if I need a shave tomorrow. Today's shave was that close, but if I decide to go for it, I'll probably use my 1912 with the stainless steel handle to have a back to back comparison.

Ever-Rrady 1914/1924 - Day four

Today I used my 1912 with the stainless steel handle. While the shaves with the 1914 and the 1924 were perfectly OK, I just prefer the 1912. It looks better, I prefer the way it holds the blade and somehow the shave is more fun. I tried to analyse why that is, but I failed.
I'll post the razors to Lee @rowlers after the weekend.
Thanks @alancrab for the pass around.

That's Correct Andreas..They are Flatter Against the Face with a Shim because the Angle has been Corrected..This is where the Manufactures Instructions made Sense..People have been confused with these Instructions because they Don't Hold True with a Current Gem Blade..And Why Would They..:D
