Am I Missing Something?

Some people say that Fine Accoutrements use the same Tabaco formula. I think the result is close.... I do like the choice of scents Fine offers though.

No, PAA soaps are all vegan.

Steve B, admittedly there is a lot more snobbery as regards artisan razors, soaps, etc., than many let on. Some artisans make great soaps, but...and it's a big but....many of the reviewers of those are factoring in aesthetic factors, e.g., smell & post shave feel (faceturbation), and less on the actual shave quality. That's fine & dandy and it's easy to fall down that hole, but it doesn't mean they actually shave light years ahead of an old Palmolive stick.

I am not trying to denigrate artisan soap makers as they are risking their own capital to try & sell a product and that makes the World go 'round. God bless 'em. In the end, the mere fact that someone hangs around on any shave forum is because they want more than say just a Spartan kit and enjoy trying new things. Man is curious like that.

I'm quite aware of the differences between mass-produced vs "artisan" soaps. I just don't know that my $50 MdC, or PannaCrema Nuavia are that much better than my $10 soaps. But I do admit to a bit of self-satisfaction when I gaze upon their esteemed presence in my rota.
I think you have hit the nail on the head, what better reason to use such soaps if it makes you feel good while you are using them, life is short so why not do what makes you feel good even if it doesn't stack up. It's the same with razors, EDPs / EDTs and many other things that are not even shaving related. it's not to show off its because it makes you feel good. :) P.
