Blade Review Spreadsheet

Yes, remove it would be a good idea. After all the prices change so often, and from vendor to vendor. You could keep the colour banding, by moving the points system down to match the removed band.
As long as it shows what blades are good and worth splashing out for. it all helps I have often looked at the score sheet before deciding whether to buy blades or not.

I'm thinking of removing the pricing column from my spreadsheet. My thinking is the 'bargain or not' factor shouldn't keep a relatively average blade with an artificially high score, or hold back great blades which can be pricey (or not!). I think it might be better to just judge the blade on whether it's good or not, and not let wildly fluctuating prices factor into it at all.

When I started this I never thought so many blades would vary in price so much over time or indeed that the table would be used so much by so many for so long. I'll see what people think (if they post their comments here) and make a decision next week. If I did remove the column the scores would all drop and I'd have to re-think the colour bandings for the score totals accordingly.
What I have is just a column Buy Again? Y/N & Price/VFM.
Here are all the criteria I use 1=poor, 5=best:

Name
Country
Price/VFM
Sharpness
Longevity
Smoothness
Irritation/Tugging/Pulling
Buy Again Y/N?
Total

Hmmm. I forgot to actually remove the price column. It's been busy these last... eight months!

Updated now to remove price and now anything with a total score over 15 gets a light blue background. Woo!

Why are the best rated blades no longer in production? What are the chances? How come the Astra's didn't score better? I thought they were a favourite around here.

Just to eliminate the possibility that the manufacturers dull the DE blades, could you put a bic on there? Just kidding, great work.

Have you tested the Personna Barber made in USA. Tried for a second time, and provided me with a comfortable shave. Maybe a safe blade ,good for beginners.

Probably. There are loads of Personna types and I've found all but the supermarket ones to be sharp or very sharp, and unanimously all are very smooth.

This is a really good tool to look at for those interested in trying new blades.
Have compared the blades i have tried with the Spread Sheet,
and have found the results very similar to my own experiences.
My latest trial was a Supermax Platinum, very comfortable shave, but not close.
Thanks to your efforts am not tempted into trying the duffers out there.

I don't have Excel 2010 and on the rare occasions these days hat I update it I use Google Docs as everyone can look at it without having to have an Office-type package installed on their PC or phone. Hopefully it's of some use. If someone wants to adapt my version in Excel 2010 or Libre Office, Open Office, etc. then they're welcome to. I claim no copyright

Hi NTS, do you have some insight into the various modern Wilkinsons? I can't make heads or tails of them. I've seen German made in white or black and from elsewhere in the same contrasting "colours".

Do you know if the unbranded Israeli Personnas are the same as those often referred to as Israeli Crystal Platinum Chrome? (white plastic dispenser, blue card, white wrapper that say "Super Platinum" with blue circles)

I didn't see St Pete's Gillette Silver Blue on the list. Do you have access to those?

Gillette Platinum "Swedes" are readily available in every town in Denmark for about $1.90 USD or 1.20 GBP per blade. I'm sceptical that they are out of production, unless Danish pharmacy chains hold large NOS.

Finally, as promised, I'll try to get you some "Super Li-BANG" blades in March. Has anyone else seen these or know anything about them?

Hi again. I don't know much about the modern (German) Wilkinson blades except every variant I've tried is rubbish.
I have Gillette Silver Blue but don't generally maintain this spreadsheet anymore; however, I will add my scores for the GSBs and the Chinese blades you're sending.

The 'in production' field is just a best guess

Haven't tried the Platinum Chromes. Only the supermarket Personna are lacking in cutting availability so there's a good chance they will be good.
