Looking at a cheap secondhand small car but must be 'different' and to some extent impractical for good reasons.

Top of my list at the moment is a Daihatsu Copen and an Alfa Romeo Mito. Problem is I don't know anyone who has owned either for an honest owners opinion.

Thought?

Copen is very specialist. It started with a tiny 600 cc turbo before they put a boggo 1.3 in it. Mito is not a bad little car but a late model Fiesta would still run rings around it in ride and handling.

The MX5 is on the list as a possible.

I do drive a Dacia Stepway quite regularly as it is my son's daily drive (bought by father). Far too practical.

Must be inpractical as I don't want people in the back, or at least not in comfort so that they don't ask again. We already have a family car and this one is to drive to work on ships around the country. Some luggage space but no requirement for too much. The Copen does push the boat the other way though. As someone said 'two Mars bars and you're about there'.

MX-5. Impractical, enormous fun and available for very reasonable money.
+1 Loads of fun

My wife had one many moons ago and I thoroughly enjoyed it. :D
