Chinese knock-off

New QShave with black finish:

VIuOG

Spotted that the other day, was sorely tempted by it for a tenner posted.

Yes, it appeared in the italian Amazon last week i think and to be honest, i like the black one much better than the silver. For a moment i was tempted too, but, i am really happy with mild razors, so i thought "what am i going to do with an adjustable!". And besides, i think it's better to become master of 2 razors (that i currently use), than jack of all trades and master of none.

Well you certainly have your head screwed on! If you're Obelix, I'm certainly Asterisk! :D I went hell-for-leather and dived straight in with the ol' cut-throat razor! Only thereafter did I decide to trial DE razors and SE razors and have probably tried more razors than I can count on my fingers, and I'm still almost a year in! :D

Oh dear, you started with a straight razor? That's something i will *never* do! You did dive in deep waters immediately! I am 8 months in. So far, i have found that:
- I can get bloodless BBS with almost any blade and all blades seem to do the job. I have 12 blades in large numbers for variety, but it's not like i see a huge difference between them, except from old Derby stock (too dull) and i am still trying BIC Chrome Platinum, which may prove to be the only blade that shaves too rough for my taste. I am not sure yet, since i shaved only once and it was with the first badger brush shave, so maybe it was my lather the culprit. But i fear not. But i only have 3 tucks of that, no big deal.
- I really like boar, but despite starting with Proraso brush (as 99% of Italian wetshavers), i soon found that it's too big, too stiff and clumsy and i have found perfection in the medium size boars. I can lather anything i tried both in bowl and face lathering. Guess what size that is!

I also have another Omega 27x57mm in unbleached bristle, but i have it elsewhere. The resin handle Omega is heavy and very pretty, but the loft is 60mm and i think it's a bit too long for my taste. It's more "show-off" than anything else. I prefer the smaller ones with the plastic handle. Here's the interesting part. The one with the white handle is much softer than the others. Same for the one in the red resin. Both are bleached. The other ones are not bleached and are stiffer/don't bloom as much. I have used a bit one of the black handles. So, i am settled as far as boars go. I will be using this boar model until i die. I can lather with it with closed eyes. Different coloured handles for variety too! :D

- I have 7 razors, between EJ DE89 and Weishi F. The EJ DE89 seems smoother, but i get BBS in 4 passes from both, pretty much with the same work.

So, after some months, i have found some cornerstones to stick with.

P.S.: No, i am not an Omega reseller. Simply, they are dirt cheap in Italy, i like them very much, but i don't trust the handle longevity too much, so better stock up. Plus, they even come with their own drip stands! I couldn't resist.

Well I now have a clone in its Ming Shi incarnation. It looks great. I was a little concerned about the slight rocking that can be forced against the spring, especially at the most aggressive setting (which I need), but I had no issues using it opened right out with a Feather blade. The blade exposure looks quite alarming, but it worked for me. It is, as I noted in another place, a very noisy razor, but it it quite fun to hear it slicing the whiskers!

Does it shave as close as my R41? Probably not, but time will tell.

Out of curiosity; anyone tried both the Q-Shave & the Ming Shi? Having watched a couple of comparison vids on Youtube - the Ming Shi seems to come out as the favoured. And it's cheaper

There are dozens of discussions on this. By all reports they come from the same factory, are exactly the same razor, and whether one is better than the other likely varies with the day of the week it was produced or which inspector signed off on it.
