Come on England!

Sterling has really blunted his development by going to ManC, and has lost a lot of confidence. He should have stayed at Liverpool where he was getting lots of opportunities. If he doesn't kick on under Pep (who was happy to leave Gotze on the bench all the time) then he will probably be another career wasted by the super rich clubs. But then his bank balance probably doesn't care.

You've reminded me of that painful documentary of Liverpool on a US tour, and the recently arrived Brendan Rodgers threatening to send Sterling home for giving him lip. Doesn't that seem like ancient history now (in a good way)?

Hmm but would he have started ahead of Coutinho, Firminho, Lallana and Milner?

I don't see Stirling as a starter, period.
At best he's the pocket rocket to be used once the opposition start to tire.
So effectively another Lennon, Milner, Walcott or Townsend figure? Great hah heard Liverpool are after Walcott. In it for the money alone? Will have to see if he goes to China in a few years.

I'd say Lennon and Townsend have both been much better than Sterling the last season. Lennon has been a bit part player for Everton but always works hard in attack and defence and has developed an end product when he gets into good attacking positions. Townsend, along with Wijnaldum (spelling?) was one of the very few positives in Newcastle's dreary season and was very unlucky not to make the final squad as there aren't really any in form natural wide men in the current squad.

Milner will get a lot of game time under Klopp at Liverpool. Hard working and constantly presses when required and probably a better footballer than he's given credit for. I agree about Walcott though - too many anonymous performances.

Its a pretty difficult circumstance to judge. Looking at the season just finished:

Walcott: 12 goals in 45 appearances
Lennon: 6 goals in 31 appearances
Townsend: 4 goals in 22 appearances

When considering attributes, they all have pace, none has a serious finish (Townsend has his moments) and of the three I couldn't choose the best crosser or least injury prone. At a push I would go for Townsend, he seems to work hard but as you mention Milner (7 in 52) is equally determined.

If I had it my way I would have Ross Barkley on the wing with 14 goals in 57 appearances last season.

I reckon Iceland will be in the mix, that's ICEland.

Win tonight to finish second (assuming Portugal hammer Hungary).

Play England in the next round.

England don't deserve to be anywhere near the last 8.
Why not? They have under-performed but not lost. If Portugal win they will have the same record as England - the same goes for Iceland. Alternatively Portugal could lose and finish bottom of their group.
