Disposable razors ££££ Straight Razor save ££££££

Not necessarily @billy. How much is a good set of hones to buy from scratch? Then you have to learn and really you need someone experienced to learn from. You tube is OK but you can only learn so much from a video mate. If you ever take on an apprentice let me know.

You're SR Shavin Would be a Lot Cheaper if Learned to Hone them..o_O

Your 100% correct, alas then I wouldn't have met the friend and tutor I now have. Also I had a complete set of stones and Jnat's but I suffer with Fibromyalgia and the wrists couldn't and wouldn't take it. Plus i don't have the time with my work. The truth though, if I did it myself, I would never have the excitement of waiting for my next honed batch to be returned for my approval and admiration.

The problem with YouTube videos is either the majority are newbies like me and never quite get anywhere, then there's the guys that are totally trained in the art and go too quick and make it look so easy without teaching you anything. Then there's matter of opinion ( not "subjective" a word banded about far to much in shaving forums ) in WTG or ATG etc or there's that guy with the woman's name that shaves and hones but I can't take shim seriously.

I have just sent my two Kamisori off to Pugh the special one to have a light honing, sure I could learn how to do this myself but with such expensive razors I would rather let an expert in his field do the work and I'm sure they will be sharper than they have ever been once J has worked his magic on them. :)

Its Very Clear to Me After Honing a Lot of Vintage SRs that the Average Guy in the Street Even in the Straight Razor Days of the By Gone Era Were Not that Proficient at Honing SRs by the Amout of Excessive Hone Wear on them & Bad Bevel Setting..Also..A Lot of Photos from that Era Show a Huge Proportion of Men with Beards or Partial Beards..They Obviously Weren't that Proficient with SRs..o_O

These Guys Would have Had Plenty of Opportunities to Learn as Well from Elders or Other People..:)

Hmmmm to agree or not to agree?

My fence doesn't have a slight bow so I think that say's it all.

Are you referring to photo's from the Uk or other lands. My sense of history back to the 1800's is of men that are mainly but not exhaustively shaven, even the poorer coal miners etc, being from my studies not age.

My own memory and I'm a mere 1/2 century old is always of my great grandfather and grandfather both coal minors from South Wales, straight shaving. Complete with brush, mug, I always remember it was a stick of shaving soap wrapped in foil. The strop always hung at both homes next to the coal fire, as that is where shaving was done, in front of the coal fire, mirror above.

I also always remember the odd nick or cut but never a blue word was raised, as though it was excepted as the norm.

Now my grand parents never entertained trying to teach me to shave with a straight razor, although I do remember both my uncles and my mum stropping the razors prior to the grand parents using the said items.

My memories from there were of my uncles using DE razors still with nicks and cuts, my dad also using a DE and the toilet roll hanging from his face, right up till myself leaving home. From there on in it was Disposable all the way.

My point is my history of the UK is of mainly shaven men and my factual memory is of shaven men but my knowledge of history for the comman man back to the 1800's ( didn't study further back ) is of predominantly shaven men. Now history I learned from memory was people over the pond were more bearded than not up until a certain point.

This is an opinion, my opinion, it's not subjective.

So who came up with the bright idea that Straight Razor Wet Saving was cheaper in the long term than disposables, I think it was a straight Razor Restorer or Honer, Simples.

Can this be healthy after 4 short months. The picture is hiding the draw with 19 SR's and then the box of wrapped 98 SR's going to my Honer or the 20 he already has and no i'm not lying. Best is I still can't have a shave without slicing my face but boy I'm having FUN.
It's not healthy at all. You've been doing this for four months you said? You need to learn to do your own honing. 118 razors being sent to be honed is just wasting money that could be spent on new razors, or hones, or strops.

On the other hand, honers need to eat, so carry on.

Yeah..Well..You are Younger than Me & I Don't Remember the SR Era..:)

I suppose it varies a bit. My grandfather was born in 1918 and shaved with a straight all his life until one of my aunts confiscated it after a Guinness and Bushmills binge landed him in hospital and the shakes eventually got the better of him. This would have been in the mid 1990s so the straight definitely hung around for a long time. He was delighted with the cart they got him though. Kept using Palmolive stick and a boar brush with about 3 bristles left in it. Never touched canned goop.
