Does Croap go-off?

I purchased some croap a year ago from a very well known and respected company. I haven't used it for a few weeks and opened it today.

The soap had become more fluid and appeared to have “fermented” with an ammonia fragrance which was really unpleasant.

Is it reasonable to expect that a soap will have a one year shelf-life?

What other rules of thumb do people apply to shaving products?

There's a thread about Wickham new soaps which mentions preserving soaps. It makes the point that preservatives should be included in soaps to prevent bacterial growth. It also points out that the harder the soap the less of a sympathetic environment it is for bacteria. You can't dismiss the possibility of bacterial growth, you can only guard against it.

Have a look at the label but most creams have a one to two year shelf life once opened. Hard soap seems to last forever.

Of course there's no guarantee that cream won't last longer but if the label says 12 months (that's) all you can expect.

I picked up some Highgrove Estate pre-shave cream from TKMaxx earlier this year. RRP was something stupid towards £30 but I think it was 5.99 for a large, very nice, glass jar full.

That only has a 6 month date which I've never seen before? I'm cracking through it though and it hasn't gone off yet?

is the soap in Question an artisan or normal croap? From my experience the only normal croap gone bad was Cella(I can't say that it gone bad or go-off because the top layer went dark and both the performance and the scent was good)
I had an artisan croap didn't actuall go-off but produced ammonia smell and I don't know if we are allowed to tell the name of the company.

It was an artisan soap and possibly from the same manufacturer. I really enjoyed using it for a year and don't really think that anything is to be gained by giving anybody a bad rap on here.
I'll put it down to experience.

Cella has a bit of a reputation for going rancid easily, ... Keep it sealed in a cool dark place

I am using a Cella tub that is old stock and could be 2-3 years old. It has hardened and has a slightly yellow colour but is not rancid. I like the cherry & almond fragrance and it produces great lather. I hear the block lasts longer and possibly years, some say.
Triple milled soaps seem to last longer but I generally use TfOBS creams which I use up at 5 months per pot.

I have about 400g left of a kilo block of Cella I bought in 2012 or 2013. it's lost it's scent but still a top notch performer. I keep it wrapped in the plastic and box it came in, in a cool dark environment.
