Feather AS-D2S vs WS-D2S (Stainless steel vs Wood handle)

Greetings Gents,

I'm planning to buy a Feather safety razor, but I'm confused about these two models: the AS-D2S (All stainless):

Dimensions:

Razor Length: 98mm/3.9"
Razor Head Length: 43mm/1.7"
Razor Head Width: 25mm/1"
Product Weight (lbs) 0.55 = 99 grams

vs the WS-D2S (Wood handle):

Dimensions:

Razor Length: 108mm/4.2"
Razor Head Length: 43mm/1.7"
Razor Head Width: 25mm/1"
Product Weight (lbs): 0.15 = 70 grams

According to what I've ended up in my research about these two razors, I can say in short that the all stainless is a bit shorter, heavier and has grains all over the handle, while the wood version is a bit longer, lighter and has a smooth wood finish in the middle of the handle.

Now my question, according to the specifications above, which razor should give me a closer shave? and which one I should buy?

Please if anyone tried them both, let me know or write your recommendation below if anyone of you has at least tried one of them.

Cheers.

I have had both at the same time. The biggest difference is the handle. The wood version is thinner but longer than the steel version and is also a little slippier because of the lacking knurling. The longer lighter handle has the same balance point as the steel handle.

But the feel of the wood version is more exclusive because of the material. In the end I sold the wood version and kept the steel, which still is in my rotation.

It's all about the wood, do you like wood, that is the question! :) P.

Some say the longevity of the stainless steel version could be better, but in general everyone says that the feather razors are too mild and not aggressive enough.

I have a really heavy and thick beard ... what about this parker model?

suggest me some names mate.

I've used the AS-D2 on a pass around and I fell in love with it. It's exquisite. Beautiful. It's mild, but with the correct angle and a Feather blade, it is still efficient.
Then I won a WS-D2S in our raffle (back in the days). They shave the same, but the wooden handle left me cold and I sold the razor. I only didn't replace it with an AS-D2S because by then I had fallen into the SE rabbit hole.

which one shaves closer (more aggressive) ... the feather or merkur futur?

If you are after 'evil and aggressive', then the Feather is not a good choice. If you are after 'tame yet efficient' then it is. The Futur is adjustable, so of course, it's more aggressive when you use it on 'aggro'.

Merkur Futur vs Muhle R41 ... which one is the beast?

@Classic_4Ever you appear to be missing the point. :)

The idea is to spend years buying, and trying, tens of thousands of combinations of brush/soap/razor/blade/splash/balm in the bid to have that one perfect shave.

Coming in, and asking the Wrinkled Sages for the shaving equivalent of 42 wouldput all these artisans out of business, and turn shaving back into the boring chore it used to be for us.

Buy a few different razors on the BST forum, and try for yourself. Put what you don't like back on BST for minimal loss. Try some of the pass-around razors. You may find a relatively mild, but effecient, razor with one of the sharper blades does it job for you so well you don't need something that can get a badger's arse BBS from 30 feet away.

There is no perfect answer, just hope that yyou have fun in finding the perfect answer *for you*

Cheers, John

I found the R41 not bad with the right handle. I'm sure if you put a handle on the R41 so the weight matches the Futur (125g or thereabouts?) it will rip your face off. If you really need "aggressive" get yourself a (very) cheap shavette and put half a rusty Derby blade in it.
What's this obsession with "aggressive" razors? I still don't get it.

An R89 head on a decent heavy handle. The do it all without breaking the bank.

If you can spend out, a Timeless. Aggressive shave with a mild feel and to me the finest razor to hit my face.

If you want aggressive with the instructions 'light blue touch paper and stand well back' then the Ikon SB does a wonderful job. Hard to get closer without shifting skin and appears to be still shaving bristles long after they have been removed.

In general though and as mentioned; do try as many razors as you can. What suits one person may be way off someone else's choice. Swap handles, swap blades, they all make a huge difference.

Have some fun getting there and enjoy the journey as much as the destinaction.

I think I may have found my perfect combination. Edwin Jagger razor, polsilver si blade and the wonderful Saponificio varesino soap..everything works for an extremely comfortable, close irritation free shave.
