First proper shave...

Update - two weeks in and very happy, still on a steep learning curve but having a lot of fun. At the moment it's all about getting the angle of the blade right first time while keeping the pressure light and even and resisting the temptation to 'dig'. Takes some concentration!
This morning's shave was awesome, one of the best I've ever had. Looking forward to exploring the world of soaps, balms etc., but one thing at a time :)

Glad to it's all going smoothly and it'll be even smoother when muscle memory kicks in. Spend the grand sum of 50p and get a stick of Palmolive from the supermarket, a great intro into soaps.

Personnas blue are my favorites i have tried to far so yes, ymmv ☺
Polsilver are my favourite from that bunch, definitely a case of ymmv.:D

I am relatively new to wet shaving with DE razors. Now I am enjoying it. Thanks to the suggestion from David68, who suggested Edwin Jagger DE 89. Absolutely fantastic razor with Feather blades.
I also have a Muhle R41 twist, which does not give me the same kind of smoothness which Edwin Jagger gives. Any comments?

My first pass is along with grain. However I do not get a good feel. So my second pass is against the grain and then I feel okay. Is there anything wrong with going against the grain?

Nothing at all :) It's all about reduction from each pass. With the grain for the first pass, across the grain for the second pass, against for the third, each time removing a little more stubble.

Hey guys, checking back in at the six-week mark...
In the last couple of days I've broken a basic rule and changed two things at once: trying a Personna blade, and prepping with Proraso pre-shave, both for the first time. Unfortunately the resulting shaves have both been lifetime bests, including a Monday morning, always a stern test -- so now I'll never be able to change anything again. (yeah right)
A couple of other thoughts:
1. That pre-shave stuff has a weird texture - if it wasn't for the label I'd have thought it was food. :)
2. @Boru62 was right about muscle memory. Also I'm gradually coming to terms with valuing comfort over closeness.
3. I'm finding that my shaves these days *feel* closer, but *look* as if they leave a little more stubble. Is this a common thing?
Thanks for your support! Have a smooth day...
