First Proper Shave

Very much so! It's a shame when it's piggybacking such a good shave! It's not deterred me, however. Just a tad red and and tingly at the minute! Next one will be better ;) I was looking forward to tonight's shave as well which is the most frustrating bit!
I know exactly what you mean. Your next shave will be perfect!

You could have said that an hour ago!! Yeah I think I was a little too "firm" today as I felt a little too light yesterday whereas I think it was more maintaining the right angle in certain areas that was the problem.
Result was a few more nicks but it's more razor burn on my neck and lower jaw area that is the problem. Bit slower and more gentle tomorrow methinks

Hi Antonio

Did you use a pre shave product for your first couple of shaves?
There are lots of ready made pre shave oils and butters out there, and it can be a bit daunting deciding which to use.
A very inexpensive product you might like to try is Wilkinson's own brand body butter.
It comes in several fruity "flavours".
I've used it recently and it has helped with razor glide, and makes your skin feel hydrated post shave to some extent.
I suffer razor burn on my neck, and using this stuff has greatly reduced the redness and burn.
For 95 pence it's worth a try, and if it doesn't suit your shaving needs you can use it as a body moisturiser, (that's if your Mrs doesn't take a liking to the scent of it and pinch it for herself !)
Another product that lots of forum members would recommend is British Barbers Association pre shave oil. This stuff does what lots of other products claim to do, but often fall short.
It's made from exotic oils, smells divine and will help make your shaves feel effortless. I've found that depending on what shaving cream or soap I use, there is no need for a post shave balm or lotion, as it really hydrates the skin.

Good luck with your next "proper" Shave

Hi Paul

I didn't yesterday but did the day previously and again today. I went back to proraso green ore shave and green soap today and no razor burn.
I think I was just a little hung ho yesterday buoyed by my first day success. Slower and lighter again today. No razor burn but not quite as smooth. I think i need to improve my technique as it's where my beard grows at angles that isn't so good as I don't maintain angle as well when shaving in different directions to straight up and down. It will come [emoji106]

One thing to remember - don't chase the BBS smoothness in the early days. Just concentrate on getting three passes done without any damage.

Every pass you do will give you feedback about your face, your technique, and the best combination of products.

I found it took about a month to get any real consistency. That said, even after a year or so, I'm still picking up nuances and improving.

here's my two bob's worth of humble advice...I've trained my mind to "Shave the lather from my face, rather than the stubble"..this has helped me a great deal, and taught me to apply next to zero pressure to the razor, just letting the weight of the razor & blade do the work and me guding it to do so..Your right about Learning your technique, take your time and you'll see the rewards...Remember,it takes a while for your skin to adjust to DE shaving..
@Paul L is right about Wilkinson's body butter, a excellent Pre-shave,at a very reasonable cost..i would like to add, that you get some "Aloe Vera Gel" also as a post shave, this i guarantee with help 100% with irritation & razor burn, if you have a "Bodycare" shop in your area,i recommend you get some it only costs 99 pence...It's excellent stuff.;)
Last but not least, enjoy your new shaving experience. Regards.;)

95p pre shave and 99p post shave

Who said "proper" shaving had to be expensive !

I've recently made a scented witch hazel mixture that cost less than £2. It helps to reduce razor burn and tones the skin.

I appreciate that more expensive products formulated for shaving purposes are also very good, but those who are new to DE shaving may find that the cheaper products work for them , leaving them with more cash to spend on good quality brushes and shiny expensive razors and the like !

Great minds..and all that, i get my witch hazel & essential oils from home bargains, i add some peppermint oil for my " spring & summer mix" and lavender oil for my " Autumn & winter mix" ,and your right it doesn't have to be a expensive thing..it's just some people are "brand name snobs", but it's a matter of choice what people want to buy...
even though our choice, gives the exact same results, without the brand name expense.Regards.;)

I found that mapping my beard really helped. I was actually shaving across the grain on parts of my neck on the first pass, and against the grain on the second pass. Then obviously shaving with the grain on the third pass. Since establishing how my beard grows and shaving accordingly, I have had very little irritation.

Welcome to the world of DE shaving. Everybody has tips that work for some people and not others. My tip would be to try your shave with cold water. Wash your face in cold water, soak your brush in cold water and do your shave in cold water. It is a bit of a shock at first but my skin feels great with fewer nicks and razor burn. I have a post in general shaving section with links to a post on another forum. Hope it helps
