Hi folks, I have a question that I am hoping that someone with more of a understanding than me can answer.
Question what is the difference between a Gibbs number 15 and number 17, now I had read bits and peices regarding Gibbs razors including the adjustable 15 and 17 and was lead to believe that the 15 was anodised aluminium in a gold colour and weighed in at around 38 grams and the 17 was chrome on brass and weighed in at just over 70 grams.
The reason I ask is because I have found a chrome 15 that weighs just over 70 grams and am confused .
Any help will be most welcome. :)

Wow, info a little thin on the ground regarding these razors however @pj3r came through and was a mine of infomation regarding these razors, he shaves with his Gibbs number 15 all the time and was able to tell me everything I needed to know, big thanks going out to him for his many PMs and his help in tracking some down that were for sale .

Tnx for yours kind words![emoji57]

It will be interesting if someone knows something more about it to tell us.

BTW Gibbs is one of the best shaver I ever try. And my favorite.

I had a shave with my Gibbs number 17 today and wow, it was a fantastic shave. It's a very well made bit of kit and I enjoyed using it very much. :)

Resurrecting an old thread but perhaps you could lay out that info for posterity. I also acquired a no 15, chromed and essentially identical in weight (73g) to my No 17. Not that I mind, but I was anticipating aluminum based likely upon the same (mis)information you came upon. Perhaps only the gold was aluminum? If so what's the difference between the chrome 15 and 17 other than the bottom knob?

Colour me confused.

As I know, there is two variants of No.15. Lighter, gold one, which is made of aluminium, and heavyer, chrome one. The gold one has black plastic knob at the end of the handle and No.15 has chrome one.

I belive, in some point of time, that Gibbs just rename chrome No.15 to No.17. As I know, there is no difference between No.15 and No.17, exepct some minor cosmetics diference (postion of red dot on dialer, writing on the baseplate).

Also, as I know, all No.15 are clearly marked as No.15 at the bottom of the baseplate. Some of No.17. Has no mark No.17.

They started with production of No.15 somewhere in the mid 30s. I didn't find where they started production of No.17.

Perhaps, some of our French membrrs know more.

Adjustable Gibbs No.15/17 is one of the best razors ever! Very fine shaver which is build to last forever. Of course, YMMV.

I hope this help. Or ask anything! [emoji6]

Thanks. My No 15 has the black knob rather than chrome. As you suggest, my 17 bears no model number.

Hmmm... Strange combination - chrome No15 and black knob. Never see that combination. Perhaps someone made your No.15 of two different models. [emoji848]

The wick point of this razors is plastic handele, which can easyly be broken if you overtight it.

I thought the same as you so ended up with a 15and 17 and one with no number! The gold ones are the aluminium ones but not as easy to find I could not find any difference between all three I had 15, 17, unnumbered . They are not all date stamped under the blade bed to confuse things more.

Gotcha. My first one is unnumbered also. The adjustment ring and bottom knob are slightly different than my 15.

I have never seen the "black bottom knob model" it's also intresting to know that although they all look the same if you mix the parts up they won't fit the razor they didn't come off , I think it was the caps and blade beds I had problems with when trying to mix and match, very strange indeed, but fantastic razors none the less.
