Gillette adjustable (slim)

I did a three pass shave with mine set on 5 this morning. Tried face lathering for the first time (Palmolive stick directly onto the beard) which wasn't a massive success (I needed to top up the lather with a little bit of cream in a bowl for the third pass. Good smooth shave though?

I've not tried it on more than 5 but also use a red tip flare which I suspect ha a bigger blade gap than the 9 setting?

well my slim has not had much use this week but I did get one shave with it set to 5 and it did feel comfortable and it produced a fantastically close shave .
My only drama now is a Rockwell 6s came up on BST at a bargain price and I have been a bit preoccupied giving this razor a go. With my Muhle R89 I now own 3 excellent razors and I'm a bit spoiled for choice.

the slim isnt the best razor. it didnt work for me either but i found a russion knock off razor which is much better because the blade gap is larger

Hi. I tried a slim for the first time today. Did the first pass on 7, second on 5 and third on 3. Very smooth, no discomfort. I am really impressed! :)

Andy.

For touch ups with an adjustable, I end up going with a larger blade gap setting. I figure that if three passes haven't removed the stubble at that stage, going back to a less aggressive setting won't do it.

I really like my Gillette adjustables.
On the practice of using a lower setting on the final pass: as you need to get a lot closer to the skin to shave the minuscule hair length, you will probably apply more pressure. More pressure on a high setting can mean irritation and blood. On a lower setting you might well get away with it?

Working on two principles:

  1. Never apply significant pressure; and
  2. All other things being equal; then
surely a higher setting will take you closer than a lower setting?

I can't work it out either,
Gillette TTO really work well for me.

I've tried for a week at a time;
7, 5, 3
& then
3, 4, 5
Both methods seem to work equally well??

Twisting the setting probably doesn't change the blade gap at all and the whole thing is the shaving equivalent of a placebo!

True. I guess what I'm thinking is that unless you have your technique nailed with your adjustable, applying pressure might happen. Less of an issue with a lower number dialled in.

I have no great love for the Slim or Fatboy. I get a smoother more satisfying shave from a Schick Krona.PIFed my Fatboy and two Slims.

I love the design of the Slim, and the versatility of the adjustable. I usually do three passes on 6, then dial down to 2/3 for difficult bits under the jawline and ATG on the moustache if I choose to do that. I find it very responsive to changes in settings - somedays I want a slightly milder or assertive shave, so a notch either way does the trick.
