Heads Up Simpson Quality Issues

How do you know that though? What did the vendor say to you exactly?

Please excuse my cynicism, I appreciate you're simply trying to help others avoid buying a lemon but this is serious business and such allegations can sink ships... Or a least severely damage a brands image which is potentially libellous if the manufacturer is so inclined to take that view. "Too many" is far too vague, is there anyone else out there whose recently purchased Simpsons (let's call it 6 months) knot has fallen apart that would like to chip in?

You may feel I'm overreacting but I've witnessed fora destroyed over similar threads in the past, that is exactly what I don't want to happen :)

I am one I had a Duke 3 in best badger that I have just sent back. It was only 2 months old and was shedding hairs on every use. It has been replaced by the vendor and so far the new brush has not lost a hair.

Thanks for that, I should have said to exclude shedding.... We're discussing the knots actually falling apart, or was it that bad?

Shedding is a common issue with badger brushes and seems to be a bit of a lottery (yes some brands are worse than others for this.) I've owned half a dozen badger brushes and every single one has shed hairs, ironically my old Duke 3 shed the least out of the lot.

It was shedding but at the rate where I think the knot was to blame as it was comming out at a rate of knots will upload a picture. This was happening on a daily basis. But the new replacement has not lost a single hair

Im not knocking Simpson, as my Chubby 2 Synthetic was the best performing brush I have ever owned. I sincerely hope they sort out these quality issues. They have an Iconic reputation but the retailer I bought mine from stated that there had been a considerable number of customer complaints, which had rarely happened before. I would certainly buy their products again once they sort it. The whole point of Forum like this, is to share & discuss the good, bad & indifferent in a open & honest manner, without fear or favour.

FWIW I have 2 Simpson CH2 synthetics, one in butterscotch and one in ivory, and they've both performed great, no shedding, no problems. I probably bought them 6 months apart.

Having said that, I'm mostly a cold water shaver.

Ive had a Duke 2 and a 2 x Duke 3, all she'd like crazy within a few months. my first Duke 3 was replaced whilst the other, only quite recently was issued with a full refund. I really like the Duke 3 and was considering it in a Manchurian knot, but I've been heavily turned off the brand by my experiences and the general state of their quality control as reported by lots of users.

As long as they continuing to swap out faulty brushes without any quibbles, I don't think it's worth losing any sleep over.

Simpsons have a policy of proof of purchase for this service. This policy is entirely reasonable, however this policy combined with possible QC issues might be a concern for folks selling and buying second hand brushes.

...I'd have to think hard about spending serious money on a pre-owned Simpson brush.

My Commodore X3 was okay when I bought it in 2012 but it started shedding when I put it back into use recently. Did I soak in water too hot? I don't think so but I don't know why there is a problem. Seems to have settled down now, just an occasional hair. Disappointing to say the least for that quality of brush but it seems not an isolated issue with quality control. I clean it every 6 months in 10% vinegar solution followed by a shampoo and conditioner.;)

How,long did it sit, and did you soak it while it was "out of play"? Shedding, and bristles breaking off are two different things. You say it settled down now, just made me wonder.....

Given that a Duke 3 in Manchurian Badger costs the wrong side of £250 & that i've just bought a Romera brush also in Manchurian Badger for less than £70, I really can't see how Simpsons can charge what they do even taking into account the woes surrounding buying a brush from Gustavo whereby you have to order then forget about it until it eventually arrives.

Completely appreciate that, I was probably overreacting a bit but I'm paranoid after past experiences... Years ago on a hifi forum both myself and the forum were threatened with legal action after I posted a thread complaining about the terrible service I received at a dealership, the dealer claimed it was only my perception of events and completely unprovable thus slander which could lead to loss of revenue = libel.

I find Simpsons silence on this issue to be rather sad, if it were me I would have been all over this like a rash... Its not difficult to set the record straight and at least attempt to address potential/existing customers concerns. Perhaps they dont have a PR man?

I had a duke 3 in best. It was pretty decent until 6mos in and then started to shed. I sent it back to the US vendor I bought it from and asked them to examine. They sent me a replacement (very nice of them). With the brush dry, you could just stroke it and a hair would pop loose. Very bizarre. In any case, a $120USD brush should not shed like that. I sold that replacement brush off unused because I had the what if feeling. It makes question Simpsons QC and I wonder what is going on. While many people do seem to get brushes that behave OK, there seems to be substantial numbers that do not. I will not be buying a simpsons any time soon. I had thought about getting their synthetics (chubby) but for $100USD, skip it.

I do not doubt the experience of the OP at all, but at this point I have questions about how big of a problem this actually is. I am active on a pile of forums and this is the first thread I've ever seen about quality issues with Simpson synthetics.

What may simply be a case of a handful of brushes with a problem can easily be turned into a out and out calamity on the web. Again not saying it is or isn't, but maybe Simpson's silence on the issue is due to it being mostly a non-issue.

Also my experience hence my initial cynicism about this being a huge problem that spans the entire catalogue which seems to be what was implied. If I were a Simpson's rep I would certainly be stepping in to set the record straight, that's all I meant in my previous reply.
