I Was Completely Wrong ...

I'm glad I'm not alone in enjoying a pre shave oil. I don't use it all the time, but it works well when I do. I find some soaps a little drying and not so slick, adding the preshave oil boosts the soaps abilities and allows for a comfortable shave where otherwise I wouldn't be able to have one.

For example, the last few days I've used an Erasmic shave stick with a 7th and 8th day use of an Astra SS in my 39C. Without the preshave oil, my face would have been dry and unpleasant. Add the oil and the problems disappeared. It's my own blend of castor and almond oil with menthol and mint oils. For minimal outlay, I have years of shave oil :D

Because of this thread I used a bottle of my Shave Secret oil languishing on my shelf for a few years before lathering up today. If anything it allows you to start shaving sooner after lathering and certainly doesn't inhibit smoothness. To what degree it benefits is the question. I am going to fiddle fart around with it a bit more just to break up the routine.

There are No Right & Wrongs here..I am using Argan Oil at the Moment..Its very thin..I have barbed Wire Whiskers..As mentioned above there isn't many soaps or creams that actually Do what they say on the Tin..That is to say a lot of them Lack Slickness..For me it does make a Difference..You don't need to spend money on Branded Pre shave Oil..That is a Bit of a Con that One..Its what works for You..No One else..:D

I hate to think what Bogeyman is going to make of this but, the pre-shave oil does seem to lessen the irritation from my mid-aggressive razors, and on the second-pass from my R89. I'm sorry, Bogey, but we owe it to our brethren to give honest opinions -- even if it results in being ostracized by the "He Man Woman-Hating Club" (over which Spanky and Alfalfa presided). If you are unfamiliar with those two, google "The Little Rascals".

I have received my Razorock For Chicago, and Haslinger tallow soaps. If I find them to be as good as you swear they are, I will put the oil away. Promise.

I was going to mention that one..You will find a major difference with these soaps..In fact I don't care what anybody says when you are using Aggressive Razors they are Game Changing..Tallow soaps have been getting used for shaving & washing for over a Thousand Years until fairly recent..I still use Argan Oil to soften my Whiskers before my first pass though & not for the extra glide..These soaps glide like Hell..:p

If they've been used for a thousand years (and I think you're right about that), then they have to be good.

Or maybe it's the only way they knew how and/or it was the only ingredient to be had.

My grandchildren cannot imagine life before TV, the internet and cell phones. I cannot imagine life before soap.

I sailed with a Storekeeper who reckoned dhobi dust (washing powder) was what ruined life at sea. They used to sit round on a wood and canvass hatch top, shooting the breeze and paring hard soap into flakes. Hard soap came in bars 2" x 2" x 12", all gnarled and twisted, burn the skin off your hands.

Vegetable Soaps Go Back to the Ancient Babylonians about 2,500 BC ..They did however mix it with Tallow like all Cultures for Thousands of years..It wasn't until the last few Hundred years that the Europeans made pure Olive Oil based Soaps because the Aristocracy thought Animal Fats to be Dirty..It then Got Mass produced for the Masses Around the 19th Century as a Bathing Soap..:)

I've never turned my back on the Ancients. I've ordered some Argan oil. I wanna be like you!

I still have many old bars of carbolic soap that I use now & again, including some of the old original Lifebuoy soap before the EU passed their wussified rules banning some of its ingredients.
