Irritation from Mild Razors

I think this was probably cleared up within about 3 posts.

Stick to 2 passes. Or make longer strokes, making sure to only shave each area once while it's covered in soap, and not make additional strokes without lather.

If you're making more passes/strokes with a less aggressive razor, it is because you keep losing your angle and not removing all hair. Practise will get you to the point where that is not the case.

Have you tried shimming your DE89?
I haven't tried putting a shim in the DE89 yet, although I might do soon. In the meantime I have received the Qshave Futur clone. Used that on setting 3 a couple of times with great irritation free results. My facial hair is quite wiry and the additional aggression means i am taking far fewer passes. I may have answered my own question. I will keep rotating razors occasionally to see if my technique is improving and/or my skin is getting accustomed to DE shaving.

Have you tried an injector? I believe myself to have sensitive skin and a tough beard, and I get great results since using an injector (and my OCMM but that's a different matter)! You can pick up a Schick G1 (the one I use) for not a lot of cash on Fleabay!

Thanks @jtface. If I'm honest I haven't really looked at injectors yet. I will do some research. Are the blades easy to get?

They certainly are :)

These are the blades that I am currently using:

These are the blades I have just ordered (I'll have to cross-load them into a magazine with a key).

The cool thing that I am finding is that I am getting at least 5 shaves to a blade (I aim to develop my angle and pressure until I am getting nearer 10 - which is what a lot of folks tend to get out of these blades)! They are £6.00 for 20, but £9.60 for 40... The more you buy, the more you save at Connaughts!

Yes. I would say with the Tech I probably take 50% more.
I am wondering if adjusting your blade angle may help get a better shave out of the Tech. The optimum angle with that razor is quite narrow I hear and it performs better with the sharper blades; maybe try Gillette Silver Blue, Gillette 7 O'Clock SharpEdge. The GSB should work well in the DE89 too.

If you are getting irritation with a Tech I'd say you are compensating for perceived mildness with too much pressure. As above the sweet spot for the Tech is quite narrow but the inefficient but forgiving zone is quite large which is why they are considered mild. If you are in the inefficient zone it is easy to use too much pressure.

I have several variants of the Tech, collected over the years. There are differences between them in terms of "mildness" (or "aggression"), but, for me, they work best with very sharp blades, minimum pressure and two passes only. I like Feathers in mine, and they're the only razors in which I use those blades.

The one Tech I have which is guaranteed to give me a facial shredding, let alone irritation, is the Ikon Tech model. In fact, it's so vicious it's unusable.

Hello everyone. I have the same problem here. Started with Wilkinson Classic many years ago, moved to EJ, then confused from the usage of some blades which do not fit in the ej for me, I moved to milder razor (50's Tech Made in UK and Feather Popular). These milder razor can give a good shave but they require 3 passes plus lots of blade buffing, particularly on the neck area. The result is IRRITATION almost always (I've found Astra Green and Feather to reduce the need of extra passes and to be smoother). However, I have tried then a Feather in The EJ and the result was: WTG + ATG + very little touch ups. Very little irritation but super BBS that lasted double than the Tech or the Popular. I was considering the Rockwell 6C for Xmas but then I saw the Fatip Special edition (basically the piccolo with both OC base plate and Gentile base plate). Any suggestions?

I have recently returned to using my Tech (an English Flat Bottom, Fat Handle), and have focused on the angle (keeping the cap near flat to the face) and have been rewarded with effortless, irritation-free, BBS in 2.5 passes (no excessive touching up needed).

I didn't get these results before... It's as you say - the angle is the key. I use Astra SP blades, and used to blame them for not giving me a close shave in this same razor 4 months ago!

Astra SP are sharp (and cheap) enough for me in a Tech!

The angle of the dangle is inversely proportional to the heat of the meat provided that the maxis of the axis and the gravity of the cavity remain constant. ;)

Having suffered irritation and tried 2 different mild razors I thought that an adjustable would allow me to experiment cost effectively. I bought a Rockwell 6C. I have found that the more aggressive a plate I use the less (and now none) irritation I get. As of yesterday I am now using plate 6, the most aggressive. With virtually no pressure required and fewer passes irritation has stopped. I need much less post shave care now.
Also, a top notch soap (doesn't equate to expensive) really helps with post shave skin feel. I am now reaching for Tabac every time.
