Jinhao 599 Fountain pen

I've too been enabled by this thread. I have two on order the 599 and the X750 with some spare convertors.

Ordered some Blue Black ink from Diamine, which arrived today.

Quite like the look of Diamine Oxblood, and may purchase some of this next.

Nice thread and good info, thanks for sharing @Darkbulb ;)

Do post what you think when you get them :)

Not feeling too good today, have had a bit of a cold and been feeling sorry for myself. Then this turns up @Darkbulb
I think it's the 599, (no paperwork with it). I had a slight problem getting the convertor to pick up the ink and now have blue fingers, but wow! It was worth the wait and blue fingers. First attempt at writing with it and being very impressed I just had to dig the camera out to photograph it. Will have a bit more fun with this a bit later, I'm now feeling more perked up! :)

Very nice indeed!
I can't tell for sure in the photo but is that a metal bodied v1 599 maybe?

Yes it is the metal body 599, I thought I was ordering a plastic one but very happy to have this. Just wrote a letter to my longest friend of 35 years, she will be pleased that I have a new pen and am writing to her. The pen really is nice to write with and I'm so happy that it does not come with predictive text. :)

Not a bad score at all - the black metal bodied v1s are a bit less common. :)
I like my white one and it's spends a lot of the time in my bag all inked up.
I'm constantly surprised at how smooth the Jinhao nibs are and keep wondering when my 'luck will run out' and I will get a bad one but maybe they simply are good pens.

Interesting that I should get the V1 metal body. I just checked the listing and it was the plastic one I ordered, maybe they had run out and made my order up with old stock.

I agree this is a very good pen indeed, certainly exceeded my expectations. Thank you for the enable. ;)

Just discovered that the paper plays a huge part. I placed an entry in my diary and the ink bleeds badly. Without really looking, is there a thread on recommended paper to use with such pens?

I did order some convertors and they look to be much better than what came with the pen so I will swap it over once this runs out. I will wear a pair of vinyl gloves though next time as the ink seems to be permanent and it looks like I have the fingers of a Smurf.

As far as paper goes it does matter quite a bit and there are more opinions on paper than there are pens :)
This is a pretty good write-up that shows how different papers take to the fountain pen ink.

Some common favorites are;
- FieldNotes
- Rhodia
- BanditApple
- Calepino
- Moleskine
- Tomoe
- a slew more....

Thank you @Darkbulb will check that out and try some of the suggested papers. What is your personal preference and why?

If I had to pick my personal top three favs I'd say;
1) BanditApple
- Great price (three notepads for $12 w/ free international shipping)
- almost zero show through, amazing thick and even paper

2) Calepino
- Has a tiny bit of show-through but not enough to be distracting
- Love the history of the company and their continued process for making them

3) Tomoe
I've only used the Tomoe in my Hobonichi planner but I'm constantly amazed at how such an extremely thin paper can deal as well with wet fountain pen ink as it does. Sure there's some show-through but very little, if any, bleed through and the ink shows really nicely.

A lot of people love mnemosyne paper but I haven't had the opportunity to try that yet.

Order placed at Cult Pens.

Calepino No.3 Notebook Blank Set of 3
Diamine Ink 30ml Bottle Grape
Diamine Ink 30ml Bottle Oxblood
Kokuyo Standard Notebook Blue
Original Crown Mill Classic Laid Paper Writing Pad A5 Cream

@Darkbulb I couldn't find the place that sells BanditApple?

Following the link you posted Richard is good and the Midori Color Paper Notebook took my fancy but unfortunately no UK supplier for it. I will keep searching in the US for someone to ship this to the UK at a reasonable price as I like the idea of a cream coloured paper notebook.

I would say that I am well and truly enabled in the writing department. Glad I finally pulled the trigger on the Oxblood Ink, looking forward to using that.

Thanks again for your help. :)

Someone is jumping in with both feet ;)

Really curious how you like the Kokuyo and Crown Mill notebooks, haven't tried them myself.

This thread has some photos and info about BanditApple
This post has some ordering info about BanditApple
This post by @Celar36 is giving a heads-up on that the 4G of their notebooks (new and improved? :)) will be available for order end of July

@Darkbulb Thank you for the links. But I will save them for latter as I have spent my allowance for today and I am sure they will lead me into temptation. I can resist most things but not temptation. ;)

Certainly will post back my findings on the Kokuyo and Crown Mill notebooks. I bought the Crown Mill to see how nice it is. If I like it I will buy some of the writing paper and envelops in cream.

I am always making notes and have at least 6 note books dotted about which I write my thoughts into for future reference, the majority is business and soap making related ideas. But the new pen, ink and paper now has me fired up to do more letter writing. I really enjoyed writing the letter by hand earlier, much more fun than punching plastic keys on a keyboard or fighting with predictive text on my tablet.

Thanks again. :)

@Darkbulb This Crown paper is really nice, no bleed or show through what so ever. I like the texture and weight of it and will certainly be purchasing the writing set, (A4 paper and envelopes).

I used Grape ink which is very nice, in fact I think I like it better than the blue black . The photo below don't really do it justice as the colour balance is slightly off towards the green spectrum and the light is uneven, but I think you get the idea. Would I recommend this paper? Absolutely!

Next up will be the Kokuyo, which I have used with the blue black ink. I will be buying more of these as I like the size and page design. I will find something to write and put a photo together of the Kokuyo Notepad. Really pleased with my purchases from Cult Pens, fantastic service to! :)
