Lather Tutorial ~ Hard Soap

An excellent tutorial. could you please do a shaving stick next? :shave

Certainly...grate stick into bowl then repeat. ;)

The problem with any soap is removing enough of it to form a credible lather to begin with...

If you have enough stubble coverage, give your chops a good rub with the soap stick to remove plenty of soap. I also like to massage the soap that's been removed into my beard to form a bit of pre-cream if you will.

If you can't remove enough soap with your beard there's nothing to stop you using the stick like a cake. Soak the stick for a few minutes or so and simply twirl your brush over the soap. That can be quite effective as you can place the stick right into the breach of the brush but take care not to be over strenuous and damage your brush.

Face lather as usual by adding a little water at a time to the brush if required.

I shall give it a try.

Awesome tutorial - I've never used soap yet (I've just ordered some), having used gels - I'm new to the world of traditional shaving. I'll certainly be using these tips whilst learning, thanks!

i've had three or four goes trying to get a lather out of a hard soap, and it's just not happening. can't take my computer in to the bathroom, so i'm left standing looking at the thin, dry coating on my chin wondering what step i've missed out or hurried. perseverance, i guess.

What soap are you using? Come to think of it, what brush too? The type of hair and size of brush can make quite a difference. If in doubt load more soap than you think you'll need. Leave the soap with a little hot water on it while you shower. When you come back to it there will be some softer soap on the top that is easy to work with. I haven't gone back to the start of this thread but expect some or all of what I've just said has been covered, but you never know. Oh yeah, your water hardness can make a difference too. :D

thanks for the feedback, guys. i'm using trumper's eucris soap, and a vulfix pure badger brush. after reading it somewhere, i tried soaking the soap cake and brush in hot water for a few minutes, then shaking them both kind of dry before use. i've got a sample of trumper's skin food somewhere, so i might try a couple of drops of that on the soap first, as recommended somewhere. and then just beat and grind the damn thing until it submits! there can be only one!

I don't know about adding Trumpers Skin food but the tutorial default setting for hard soaps is to ring the brush dry and add water gradually, once you become more familiar with the characteristics of the brush and soap you can then choose to leave more water but yes if in doubt overload the brush.

had another go and loaded up the brush more. i got a much firmer thicker lather. not as good as the exemplars in the videos, but getting there. real relief, as my backup is a freebie tube of derby lemon cream which smells like kwik-save own-brand meringue. thanks for the tips, guys
