My first open comb razor

Did some "research" using a precision scale: How long time will it take for my different brushes to dry, comparing badger, boar, synthetic. Felt important at the time but now I have completely forgotten the results so no dealbreaker discovered in the world of shaving brushes I guess.

I just go by the old method of 24h for warm weather, 48h for cold. Even if the brush feels and looks dry, I've noticed it can still be slightly damp down at the base if not left to air out long enough.

Did a search:

30 mm finest two-band badger - held 6,65 grams of water after shave - 1,08 grams after 24 hours, felt dry to the touch - checked after 48 hours and knot was completely dry - no check after 36 hours

Synthetic 25 mm - not sure of model and fibre - held only 1,33 grams of water after shave - 0,19 grams after six hours - checked after 12 hours and the result was dry as can be

I gave both brushes the same treatment after shave - shake, shake, shake over sink - swipe, swipe, swipe over knuckles, to remove excess water

My low tech test method was to slide a thin piece of paper between the bristles as low as possible to the base of the knot, touching the glue bump. Then I'd squeeze the bristles snug, slightly squishing the paper. If there are wet stains on the paper the brush is still not dry.

Tested on the Omega 48 & 49, which are boar knots. Although lofty and large, they aren't very dense knots, so they dry quite well.

I see commercial online advice about thoroughly drying brushes, but nothing about brush rotation.

I have used Bristle and Badger brushes continuously for over 50 years with never a problem with smells or mould, and I have only been moderately careful in drying my shaving brushes.

Only last year did I buy a synthetic, and as previously said, I like it. The latest generation are up there with the best of them.

Just a note on the original 2011 R41 which I'm fortunate enough to own, the price these now realise is ridiculous! The last couple I followed on Ebay reached almost £200! That's almost better than a BitCoin investment...

I always tell my wife a brush needs at least thirty days to completely dry out... And I shave every day. Hence, I NEED thirty brushes.

At least.
