Open Comb Razor

I have only ever used closed comb razors as the OC ones have always scared me a bit, but the OC varieties seem very popular. I understand that they are more 'efficient' than the closed comb razors. Should I try one, or just stick with what I know? Has anyone else had the same idea and found that they just couldn't get on with an OC?

Cheers,
Dan

If you have thick coarse hair an open comb can be a better option because the comb channels the hair towards the blade it also leaves more lather on your skin before the blade gets to it where as a closed bar may wipe off more lather before your blade has got to you hair.
A open comb razor is as safe as a closed comb so there is no need to be worried about using one. There is no reason not to try one, if you don't you will never know if you like them or not. :) P.

OC razors are not all aggressive, there are some out there which are very mild.

The Merkur OC head, and it's MIC clone eg Razorock/Yaqi is incredibly mild, even more mild than a Gillette Tech.

The Yaqi DOC/Razorock SLOC is very popular at this moment in time and it's on the mild side of things as well, but efficient and I'd put it as slightly more efficient than a Gillette Tech.

I myself purchased both OC heads from Yaqi for about £10 shipped to the UK, and IMO is a great deal if you are looking to try some OC heads.

You HAVE to try an open comb. The feeling of shaving with, for example, a 100 year old Gillette is just great. They can be, but aren't always, a little more aggressive but that just gives you the reason to concentrate more. The zen of shaving.

The Bostonian is my personal favourite but check a few of them out.

Like everything there are good and evil examples of both types.

I stuttered before going OC but glad I overcame my doubts. My razor of the moment is the Timeless OC and by far the best shaves of my life being had. The other reach for being the ATT M2 and again wonderful results (if not a slightly edgier shave) from an OC.

But if vicious and a handle with care shave is on the books the Ikon SB does a great job and yet closed.

It all boils down to care exercised and technique. And how quickly you want to get out the bathroom and down the pub.

Well I've bitten the bullet and ordered an OC razor..... Thank you for the suggestions chaps. The Fatip Picolo was out of stock, so I went with the YAQI one. It's the 'mini' red and black one - thought it may be useful as a travel razor is it's any good, and I ordered a separate 'mellon' head to try too (don't know if they're the same or not, couldn't really tell). Hopefully this will set my mind at ease (at least for now).
