Closed Pass Around: Hone Type 15 - Completed

Great review @MPH, I too tried a Feather yesterday in the Hone - DFS, no weepers nicks or AS Sting. Even a Feather in a Feather did not work as well for me...

Thanks! Was very enjoyable to try something new. I might have to keep an eye open for the other pass around threads now!

Generally I didn't want to try other razors in case I liked the ones I couldn't afford, or actually buy (I.e. the Wolfman)!!! ..... But I might have changed my mind! LOL.

I'll hit mine up with a Feather later today, I've just finished my first ever Topaz SS blade, which I have used in my Ikon short comb 103, and have had the 3 longest lasting stubble free shaves I've had so far.
So it will be interesting to see how a Feather in the Hone compares by tomorrow evening.

The Hone has landed in Essex.

Heavy compact little beast.

Just an FYI on the over hang, it's not really as the head slopes as opposed to the top cap being bigger or wider than the base plate?

It feels nice in the hand, the finish? This could be the kicker.

Thanks @Whosthedaddy. It does seem to acquire patina quickly. I suggest that Andrew gives it a good polish at the end of the pass around and posts pictures. Or we hand it to one of the more OCD members here :D That should be interesting.

2nd shave with the Hone.

It's very much like the Standard in my eyes, not just in feel in the hand with the non knurled handle, but the fact that it's pretty much a Goldilocks type razor. Although I haven't got any Feathers to prove a point it seems to work well despite what blade it has, how much stubble you have and safe in the knowledge that you'll be knick and irritation free.

Is it aggressive enough? Probably yes, any more and the heavy weight of the razor may exacerbate any problems or injuries as I find it a little awkward with some strokes. Then again I'm using a super lather at the moment so maybe a thinner lather for a closer more aggressive shave?

The handle is spot on, but, again on some strokes I feel it a little short . This is an odd statement for me as I like the shorter handle razors as a norm?

My eyes are playing tricks on me, has this a very slight slant to it? The line at the base of the baseplate and the angle of the blade seems to be very slightly slanted, or have I just got my wonky eyes in at the moment?

I don't mind the patina at the moment and would probably prefer this finish over a shiny new one? It's like a matte gold?

So far so good? Hell yes, like the Wolfman, the quality is spot on and can be felt in the hand and the face. I didn't get this from the Feather?

So my final thoughts are that I very much like the razor. I have bought into the ethos, and I really like that it is different to what else is out there, and that it is made from a different metal. The workmanship is great, and Hone deserves to be a company that is around for some time.

@MPH Thanks for your great write ups, I really enjoyed reading them. I like the really balanced approach and for picking up some interesting points. Thank you so much. Don't forget there is a discount code available for anyone that takes part in the pass around as a more tangible thank you :)

@Whosthedaddy Great write up. I'll take Goldilocks level, thank you really glad you enjoyed it. I hope the slant is just a trick of perspective :)

On the patina, I posted this in another thread earlier but I'll put it here too, this is my 1.5+ year old early prototype Type 15 now the surface has settled down with my routine and products, water etc. The handle is quite bright as well as some edges, and the watermarks move around a bit but the surface is quite mellow and stable. Its got a bit more shine than this picture shows too especially along the guard bar where its gets rubbed quite often. Hope it helps show where the patina and surface start getting too.
