In the Mid-Sixties I was studying industrial design at the Philadelphia College of Art. The first year everyone had to take classes in figure drawing, graphic design, 3D design, ceramics, welding, print making, plaster modeling and photography. Our photography instructor was the famous photographer Ray Metzker, who every once in awhile he would blow down from NYC and critique our stuff. The first day of class he never mentioned anything about technical things, like F stops, exposure time, or dark room technics - only that in 4 weeks he wanted to see 8 photos and we all had to buy a Pentax Spotmatic. His only caveat was he didn't want to see any cats and fire escapes.

Well, your photo of a cat and a fire escape are world class and would make the great Metzker proud. Way to go.

Welding? - shit. I fancied Art School at a certain stage - we have a very good one here in Glasgow - but I can't draw. Basic handicap for your foundation year. cheers - I

@Floid_Maniac - beautiful. Square pictures - you forget about square pictures. Just as natural as the dominant 35mm ratio? I never took to T-Max B&W properly - it was a pain to process accurately, finicky and a bit hissy - apart from the 3200 ASA version. God's gift to available light photographers. Thanks for reminding me about D76. Extremely fine grain when you got it right. A pig to mix up. Dry powder. I remember dunking big sheets of film into deep tanks of it years ago as a lowly studio assistant. cheers - I

Wonderful picture. For some reason reminds me of the numerous pickpockets on La Rambla in Barcelona.

Pickpockets - yes - somebody tried to dip me on the underground in Barcelona - in fairness it was San Jordi and I was on the metro. It was rammed. I caught him. The best way to avoid getting robbed on the Ramblas is not to be the most obvious target. I've been held up and robbed at gun point before - but that's different. I.

Inspired by @Blademonkey - a picture of my home environment. No where near as beautiful as yours. Nikon D2, 300mm 2.8 and a 1.4 or 2 x converter. January, looking north. I.
Wow! Nifty looking place. I'm always ready to try new cities at the drop of a recommendation or interesting blog. if you don't mind me asking - where is it and is it a good place to live?

Good for you. You were a lucky fellow on that one. You are right about not sticking out in a crowd/

Once was stopped for directions by a guy holding a map in a nice BCN neighborhood. The nebbish looking guy looked lost and I launched into best good Samaritan "how to get there from here" dialog. Suddenly a second person comes up to us, whips out a detective badge, and states it illegal to exchange money in Barcelona and wants to see my passport. Feeling more than a little duped and being much taller than both I started aggressively and incoherently gesturing, at which time the "detective" takes off running and the lost tourist gives his best "what, me worry" look and wanders off. Later found out that this scenario happens all too frequency in Barcelona.

My sister once had her most valuable possession robbed in Madrid - a bag containing all her makeup. Costed my brother-in-law a small fortune to immediately replace. Life's a bitch.
