Rockwell 6S - My review and impressions

@morr
So your telling me that the design of the head, the gap and shaving angles, actually means that it being stainless steel has no impact on the shave other then the weight of the razor? That's the first ive seen that said.

It may not be mentioned specifically everywhere, but I think you'll be hard pressed to find anybody stating that it's the material that makes it a great shaver.

I've seen countless members around different forums mention that the head geometry is nailed perfectly, but never seen anybody mention that it being stainless is the key to the great shaves.

I think your hate for modern stainless razors are shadowing your judgment.

the haters keep on hating..... whatever, it doesn't change the fact that it is a fantastic shaver, and it has many very happy owners... if you don't like it, move on, because there's nothing for you here..as the saying goes, 'opinions are like arseholes, everybody has one', and like most things YMMV.

I had the original Kickstarter with wonky plates, and, by rights, should have given up and put it down to experience.

However, the free replacement from Rockwell was a wholly different thing. Although I personally rate a couple of other razor models a tad more highly, mainly for aesthetic reasons, the Rockwell is one of my top favourites.

Does anyone know if the 6C will be identical apart from the material used? I guess it will be, but I know the Hone razor slightly differs depending on material.

I ask because I have one on order and after all the good reviews the 6S gets, I don't want to be a bit disappointed with 'the poor relation'.

I read somewhere that the aggressiveness by setting differs a little from the 6S due to the coating layer on the 6C adding some extra thickness between the baseplate and the cap. Don't think it's really an issue, and if it were, I'm sure guys at Rockwell will respond accordingly.

Ahh.. yes, if they haven't factored that into the raw material, then I assume you're right on the bat on that one.

I've just had my first outing with the 6S and have to agree it's smooth.
I went for the low-middle #3 plate thinking a good start from which to go higher or lower. The razor feels great in the hand, handle's knurling just right on the handle - not too course, not too light. The thing's built like a Russian tank or a Volvo. I like the powder finish; looks different to every other razor I have, but I like that it stands out. It's got plenty of weight and I felt safe to throw it around my face - although slowly as it's a heavy one.
The shave I would say was comparable to my first Edwin Jagger DE89 (from what I remember a few years ago). Very smooth and mild.

The result was zero irritation but not as close as I like (like the DE89). So tomorrow I'll try the #4 plate and see if that suits me better.

Beware, the Rockwell uses imperial thread, whereas "everyone else" (from the moden era), uses metric.

I've mixed with no issues, aside from Merkur who, apparently, uses a third type of thread. Those handles (the Merkur's) aren't interchangeable with any other razor I have as well, so I'm not blaming Rockwell's imperial choice for that.

Yes, I have put several different handles on mine, including various Maggards, and they all fit just fine.

I used my newly acquired Rockwell 6C last night. I too went for #3 plate as a starting place. I paired mine with a slightly heavier Ikon handle and stuck a Voskhod in it. It is a wonderful razor. It cuts really efficiently. No irritation and a great 2 pass DFS. If I were chasing BBS then I'd stick the #2 plate on for the final pass but I rarely ever do a 3 pass shave. I got mine from Batch300 in the U.S and TBH if he had charged me any less he would have paid me to take it off him. :D The Rockwell is the only razor that I have wanted for a good while and I'm glad I got one. Great piece of kit.
