Cheeky little Agent Shave order incoming, finally get to try TOBS rose and see how it ranks. The competition really isn't that strong so I have high hopes considering this is the cheapest of the lot and price does figure in my overall rating of a product.

I've been continuing to use the T&H rose, I now get better lathers with it (more product required, around 3g per shave) though its still a little irritating to the skin and smells quite artificial... When you first sniff it you think "ah yes, beautiful rose" but after 5 minutes it devolves into a chemical stink.

I know, I'm a fussy bugger ;)

I mixed a couple of soaps with a rose perfume oil (al rehab) and it's the most amazing scent. they have a good number of rose varieties to try so I'm sure there will be something that suits you. they're not expensive either so you won't break the bank searching. check them out on fragrantica

Thanks for the idea. Must admit I got fed up with all my attars and got shot of them! I'm actually fairly content with what's available... I dont want a perfume scent but simple unadulterated rose, Trumper so far is the only one to deliver this, negatives are the relatively high price, grim colour and parabens.

From what I've read TOBS will likely smell quite similar to Salters, which for £7.60/150g I can live with.

Late to the party James old chap! How about "Rose of Bulgaria" shaving cream? You can get the matching splash too for under a tenner. I have used the cream but being honest (it was years ago) I can't remember how it was.

It's a solid performer with a light, but natural scent. Certainly a bargain at the price

Thanks for that :)

Crazily enough I did buy some a while back but shifted it before even trying it, dont know why... It just didn't interest me enough to even try it  At any rate, I'll have completed my tour of English rose... I'm still yet to try Bulgarian, LPL and Eufros ... I have tried MdC rose but didn't find it to be anything spectacular, quite a while ago now but I recall it being very powdery - Or was that Klar Kabinett?

I was reading an old thread last night where pjgh explains the different rose scents:

Bulgarian Rose (Damaskeene) is one of the classic rose scents, Himalayan (Musk Rose) being another, Taifi (Arabian) being the queen ... queen, yes, as it's quite feminine. English Rose is more green stem.

Which is very interesting as the only green stem rose I've tried so far has been the T&H.

Pleasure James..I can definitely recommend the Rose of Bulgaria aftershave splash (if you use them) Not a true rose, it is mixed with other scents which make it a bit more masculine..but very nice.
I have tried LPL Rose de Pushkar and the scent is very nice and natural..but didn't get on with the performance..but LPL Tallow is outstanding.
What about Darron's English Rose soap? Or is it just creams you are looking for?

I'm on the fence with splashes at the moment, I've always enjoyed them but recently found them to be a bit drying on my skin, regardless of how oily I think they are :( For example, Nivea 2-Phase goes on like sunflower oil yet 30 minutes later I'm dry as a bone... Its annoying but I'm sure my wallet is thankful as I had a long list of splashes I wanted to try!

I agree with the performance of LPL, quite hit and miss. Had a tub of traditionnel which would not lather for love nor money, also had a tub of tallow oud/santal which performed great but I disliked the scent  Which brings me to Wickhams, I won a tub of the English rose in a competition but dont really get on with the 1912 base so gave it a sniff and sold it on. It smelt okay, definitely the green English rose pjgh spoke of so true to its name.

I am quite surprised by how well regarded Salter Rose shaving cream is. I've tried two Salter creams, can't remember the flavours, and was not at all impressed. My go-to Rose shaving cream is TOBS, but based on what I've read here I'm considering giving Salter Rose a try.

I'd stick to TOBS if I were you ;) Salters rose is strong on the geranium, which is fine if that's what you're after. I find the Salters performance good once lathered but its quite thin and sloppy in the container... And yes, their scents are generally quite awful, sandalwood which smells of cinnamon? French vetiver which smells nothing like vetiver (I'm informed its probably the lowest grade Indonesian vetiver.)

What you say is consistent with my experience with Salter creams. Perhaps I'll try Rose of Bulgaria instead; it's cheap as chips even with postage.

TOBS Rose!

Performance: Same as most TOBS, good enough to get the job done with moderate comfort. For me not quite up to Trumper standards but definitely as good as T&H and Salter.

Scent: Mixture between Salter & Trumper roses, perceptible geranium but with much powder and sweetness, no hint of green. Its actually really pleasant, probably the weakest of the lot but strong enough to smell it during the shave.

The list changes a bit:

1. Trumper
2. TOBS
3. T&H
4. Salter

That leaves me with one last English rose cream to try, D.R. Harris... Due to its grim colour which stains silvertip brushes I won't be in a rush to try it. Bulgarian rose has also been added to the list.

I know it's not a cream but I used Martin de Candre rose this morning... Completely destroys all of the aforementioned creams in performance.

The rose scent is quite different, the soap base has its own strong aroma in MdC which interacts with the rose perfume. I think overall its closest to the T&H rose but far less synthetic and slightly more powdery, it doesnt irritate my face like T&H did.

I think I'll try LPL Rose de Pushkar next.
