SEptember 2017

Fellow SE shavers

After a month or two away from my 1912 I have returned to it. During that time, I was using my 37c and came back to Gillette Yellow 7OCs, and got into an excellent groove.

I previously was a big fan of my 1912, but this week, I'm just finding it relatively harsh. No other major changes, ie, using my usual soaps. I can't work out why it has gone from hero to zero so dramatically. It's at the point where I am tempted to put the 1912 aside indefinitely.

Can anyone talk me out of this rut?
You might be too used to DEs before going back to 1912 land. I sometimes find that it's like retraining yourself. Different shaving angles between DE/SE, for instance. I strongly suspect that if 1912s worked for you before, you'll find the groove again. They do require different handling, though: angle of use, taking your time and not too much 'buffing'.

Don't give up. The 1912s generally are great razors and it'd be a shame to deny yourself. After all, I bet you were delighted when you first got what @Digimonkey referred to as '...a piece of shaving history.'

If you can go 2-3 days without shaving, do all the usual prep, dial in a great soap, face lather and take your time. If you use Gem PTFEs, I find they can be a wee bit harsh on the first outing. A careful hand strop can help; or even subsequent shaves may be smoother.

Hope this helps...

Claymore / Maggard MR7 handle.
Kai Captain Titan Mild (3).

J&T® padauk / finest 2-band.
Fitjar Fjellheim.
Arko Men Cool after shave cream.

English made Eveready 1912. Good point about the blade, I hadn't thought of that.
The English ones can be a bit more 'aggressive' than their American cousins. For what it's worth, I'd try another blade. Check for all the usual stuff, blade fit, alignment etc. Don't consign it to the back of the drawer. My English one is my second favourite 1912; eclipsed by the 'Streamline' (see above).

Pre: Lots of cold water
Brush: Hawkins & Brimble Boar
Soap: Figaro
Razor: General Brass
Blade: Feather Pro-Super
Post: More cold water, Hawkins & Brimble PSB

My only non-vintage SE and I really like it. Aesthetically I would prefer a bit of knurling, but I enjoy shaving with it and like the result I get from it.
Winner winner chicken dinner.
Why do I always think of Michael Winner, when I say that?

Pre Shave: Hot Shower + L'Oreal Pure Power Charcoal Face Wash and Proraso white
Razor: Executive Shaving Claymore v2 head on Pharos SS handle
Blade: Feather Proffesional (#1)
Brush: Maseto 30mm 2 band finest
Soap: Arran Aromatics Machrie
Post: Alum Block, Cold water and Humphreys Witch Hazel
AS: Lucky Tiger Bay Rum lotion

First shave with my newly acquired Claymore, I have a some other AC type razors but the head on this one seems huge, the Pharos handle seemed to fit aesthetically, but it weighs in at 155g altogether. The Maseto is a big brush but this razor makes it look quite small. It seemed appropriate to use the Scottish soap with the Scottish razor, this soap is really rather good with a very pleasant scent. The stone soap bowl is another heavy weight, not one you would want to drop, it would probably break your foot or a floor tile if it landed on one of them or least do some serious damage.

I was taking it very easy and I suspect with more practice and a lighter handle that a 2 pass shave will be sufficient with this razor, this shave needed a 3rd pass and I got one small weeper that went away with the cold water splash. The result was super smooth, and I was quite surprised at how easy to use and how maneuverable this razor is despite it's size, I expected to run into trouble under my nose but it was fine. This is really a very good razor and seems well matched to the Feather Pro blade.

Razor....Ever Ready ~ Streamline, late 1940s model
Blade....Ever Ready -~ Corrux circa 1950
Soap....OSP ~ Lavender
Brush....BSSW ~ Gonzo
Scuttle....Giles Shaving Co

A very enjoyable shave was had with the ER Streamline and vintage Corrux blade, very close, very smooth and very enjoyable :)
The OSP was as normal top notch with slickness and wonderful scent which filled the already steam laden air.
Was left with skin as smooth as smooth can possibly be.

Tomorrows another day with another razor........:)

I waa thinking that Streamlines was made in the 30s and again in the 50s. I never heard for Streamline from 40s.
