SOTD: Saturday 13th January - Friday 19th January 2018.

You could still use the razor, but how about a really nice brush and cream. Maybe a cream with a cool sounding name which would appeal to the nephew, like Bluebearďs revenge if this is still sround. Or perhaps Meißner whiskey scented soap. Just an idea.

Thanks for the reply. I'll definitely give out the Gillette Guard a run out with a proper soap/brush. A cream with a cool sounding name is a good suggestion, thanks! I'll have a look to see if there's anything that appeal to my nephew's tastes.

Sotd - Saturday 13/1/18

Razor - Megress (4)
blade - Super Max Super Platinum (1)
brush - Stirling 2 band fan
soap - Italian Barber Amici
post - witch hazel
a/s - Nivea 2 phase
scent - Halston Amber edt.

Result - top end.

Eight days growth coming off - as my other half charmingly put it - 'your face is upside down.' My beard was longer than the hair on my head. Time for decisive action. Out with the big guns - this was no time for a girl's razor. As always the modified Progress was superb - how to take a classic razor and make it even better. I'm really glad I had the chance to pick one of these things up. Effortless. Generally I'm not a fan of Indian blades but the Super Max SP are the exception for me. In the same category of sharpness as Feather and Kai blades but significantly more forgiving in use. They are cheap too. First use of the Amici soap - which I believe is made by Razorock. This was the first of their vegetarian formula soaps I had tried - very good. Perhaps slightly less slick - not by much though - than the tallow versions which is to be expected. The scent is very nice - opens citrus on a complex bed of amber, musk and patchouli among other things. Very good for me. The Nivea 2 phase doubled up as after shave and balm as usual. A humble but great product. The Halston scent was a gift from my other half - I'm generally a bit wary of cheap scents because they smell - well - cheap but this is pretty good. I like it. It doesn't have the projection or longevity of Creed but at a tenth of the price is does well. It smells like it cost a lot more than it did. I'd never heard of the brand but it turns out Roy Halston was an American milliner to trade - probably most famous for designing the iconic pill box hat worn by Jackie Kennedy at her husband's inauguration in 1961. Everyday is indeed a school day. So - a great shave - the sort whereby you find yourself stroking your chin appreciatively hours later. I hope yours are as good too - regards - I.

Prep: Hot towel
Pre shave: Prep
Razor: Barbaros TR-1
Blade: Astra S/P
Brush: 'The Duke' (Duke 3 Best)
Soap: Grooming Dept: Mallard
Post: Cold water rinse / Witch Hazel / Tallow + Steel: Dark Aftershave

Well, Mallard lived up to the hype, and provided the base for an outstanding shave with the TR-1, a razor that I find to be on the aggressive side of the tracks... BBS, and feeling fine.
That is one of the soaps I have on my must have list, slicker than a Texas oil spill! :) P.

Pre: Shower inc. Clinique face wash
Blade: Gem SS #1 (Shim)
Razor: Star Lather Catcher Kampfe Bros. 1901
Brush: Razorock Aluminium Synthetic 24mm
Soap: Saponificio Varesino 70th Anniversary
Post: Alum & BBA PB
Splash: D R Harris Arlington
Cologne: D R Harris Arlington

I have been wanting one of these razors for quite some time and when @mpf9ret offered me one of his boxed beauties, I jumped at the chance. Thank you Mike, you are a "Star" (Excuse the pun:D)
It wasn't the closest shave I have ever had but the enjoyment using such an iconic piece meant more than that to me.
A little irritation to the neck proven by the alum but BBA balm is slowly sorting that out.

Brush face lathering worked perfectly with the magnificent S.V. soap. Loads of slickness and cushion.

Finished with the glorious D R Harris and good to go for the evening ahead.
Enjoy yours! :)

Georgetown Pottery G20 scuttle (Jet Black)
Rooney 3/3 Ebony Finest #1 (26mm/66mm)
Acqua di Parma soft soap (current version)
Delta Echo Black Chrome-Nickel Feather AS-D2/Triad Satin Diamond Titanium
Polsilver Super Iridium (8)
Acqua di Genova 1853 aftershave

This was the final day of my comparison of original Acqua di Parma Colonia soap and the current version. This has been discussed elsewhere, so I won't belabor it, but while my impressions agreed with some from other shavers, they also differed in some respects. The original Colonia has the gold jar lid; the newer one has a brown lid. Briefly, for me the soaps had similar very slightly soft consistencies, and the newer one was whiter, while the original was somewhat translucent. Both lathered very easily, although the current version might have been just slightly faster. Both produced dense, rich lather that had great cushion and glide. Both left my skin feeling clean and soft; the newer formulation might have been slightly more moisturizing.

The area where I found the greatest difference was the scent. The Colonia had a noticeably stronger fragrance throughout the shave. It is more prominently orange and lemon citrus, while the current version is simpler and more aquatic. The older version also has a sweet rose tone that is lacking in the newer one, while the latter seems to have a little more lavender and jasmine. And the current version has a bit more menthol. Acqua di Parma has stated that the fragrance was "reformulated with a neutral and delicate scent," which I think is fairly accurate. Apparently this was done for marketing purposes rather than due to any health or safety concerns.

Others have said that they like the newer version and that it has improved organic ingredients. But in my opinion, the original Colonia is significantly better. As a lathering soap it works just as well for me, and I like its bolder and more complex fragrance much more. A good part of my enjoyment of shaving comes from the fragrance of the soap, and in this respect the Colonia is for me the clear winner.

How are you liking the Occam razor? What would you compare it to and would you recommend it to us? P.
Only one shave with the Occam so far, but it was a good one. The shave reminds me of the OneBlade CORE v2 but with a bigger blade, maybe it is the floating blade, there is very little blade feel. I used the 2 dot plate (it comes with a 1 and 3 plate as well) and while I would not call it aggressive it seems efficient and it did leave some minor irritation in a few places. The head is pretty big width wise and and for the most part it is OK but lower part of the guard possibly extends too much so under the nose needed some extra work. This was probably the cause of the irritation. I think a few more shaves are in order before I would make any recommendations, but it certainly gave a decent shave.

I got this razor as it seemed a bit different and it intrigued me, when one came up on a BST at the right price I decided to take a punt and so far I am very pleased. It seems very well made but the screws could be lost easily, just as well it comes with 2 spare screws. That said I suspect once I find the plate that suits me I will likely stick with it and it seems easy enough to clean without taking it apart.

Thank you, it will be interesting to hear your feelings after you have had more shaves with it, I'm sorry I didn't realise it was your maiden shave with it. I hope it works out for you. :) P.
