Standard razor - a revelation

Now that's a new condition-

Weberitis- sorts of rolls of the tongue really well!

Cheers Kev- glad you are enjoying the 'Journey' (god I hate that expression......) :))

Last nights shave with a polsilver was once again fantastic, I'm not sure what to say? Is it normal to find such a great shave so soon into DE shaving?? I have the feeling between this one and my Futur I am set!
Next run will be with a feather, I must be able to find some fault!

I have done two shaves with PolSilver now and one with a Feather. No faults. The standard razor seems to tame the Feather blade nicely. If you want to find a fault, try a bad blade. So, next is my old enemy the Derby blade. That blade is so far only good for trimming meat in the kitchen and is not allowed near my face. I might have to report back from A&E, but the Standard feels so safe.
Even though this might be my favourite right now, I won't sell (all of) my other razors. The digress, my old friend the 34C, my Schick injectors, the 1912 SE... they are all so different. The fun continues.

The shave with the Derby blade in the Standard worked surprisingly well, but not as good as PolSilver or Feather. I had the Proraso Gel Riparatore on standby and did need it twice. Only twice because I aborted the ATG pass under the nose because of tugging. The shave was again amazingly close, but not smooth enough. The Standard razor has performed the miracle of changing my reaction to the Derby blade from 'terrified' to 'underwhelmed'. The Derby blades go back to the kitchen where they will be used for trimming meat.

The standard razor is not perfect though:
Changing the blade is slightly more awkward than with other razors. The tabs on the blunt side of the blade don't protrude outside the head (like they do with Merkur razors for example). This makes it a bit more difficult to grab and remove the used blade. Not to mention TTO razors or the unsurpassed Schick injectors. Not a big problem though.
The way the head is mounted to the handle is weird. Is this deliberately awkward, so you can't use other handles? I'm confident that the 'normal' design of 'screw on head' would not have changed the shave. On the other hand: I'm very happy with the handle, so why should I care?

On the positive side:
I cleans nicely. Not being shiny seems to be an advantage here.
It looks great.
Did I mention that it shaves well?

I've read that you can use the head with other handles (and thus possibly transforming the shave yet more). Grasp the protruding threads with whatever is available but which will grip the threads but not damage them...i.e. mole grips or decent pliers or a vice and a piece of leather to prevent damage. Unscrew it from the head and then screw the loose component into the handle, ideally applying Loctite or something similar (maybe a drop of laquer or nail polish or even superglue might do) on the thread before screwing it in to keep it from unscrewing. (not too keen on superglue but you get the idea).

Haven't tried it, obviously enough, but have read it works. When I ordered it I had visions of trying one of my stainless handles or possibly the Grande Muhle handle, but never go that far. But it does give you the option to try all your handles and have a play.

I have read that as well, I'm just wondering why that's not the standard (haha) configuration. As I've said the razor works for me as it is and a different handle would just ruin its sinister good looks.

I reckon that in a configuration involving a large diameter thread and a small one, the larger frictional forces acting in the big thread will keep it tight and preferentiallly unscrew the small thread. It's not so much a standard configuration as the fact that it just unscrews that way. It requires a tool to apply additional torque to the small thread only, or a thread locking compound, to subvert this and make the large thread the only one in use.

ok

after a rather disenchanted shave yesterday with the futur i decided to have another go tonight with a rapira on the standard.
lordy, the shave felt like coming home, laying on your bed and falling asleep
super comfy bbs shave in less then 10 mins

wtf is going with this razor??

This razor is finally starting to annoy me. I can't use it to try new blades and figure out if they are good or not. This razor thinks all blades are created equal. Even the dismal Derby seems acceptable. I tried a new blade (Perma-Sharp Super) in the Standard today and it was fantastic, but I will have to transfer it to another razor to be sure (I only have a single blade of the Perma-Sharp). I like trying different blades. And razors. The Standard razor takes the fun out of this.
Then again.... I need to buy another Standard razor in case mine gets lost, stolen or breaks.

It's alright I guess... You don't have another one to sell per chance?

It just goes to show YMMV, cos, putting it bluntly, I thought it was sh|te!
Not a patch on my Weber, Progress, 37c. I also prefer to shave with my Tech, DE89, NLC and Old.
Odd eh!
(Oh and the mongoose is a above the STD too!)

On reflection you won't be surprised to know that if I DID have another I'd be inclined to keep it a bit longer than your one. To the extent that I did just happen to look on Massdrop just now as I believe I saw there was a further vote going on to get another order on the go.

In honesty if there WAS another Massdrop I don't know whether I'd go for it...as you can probably imagine. In reality if I spotted one (in any colour...the grey was cheaper) I suppose I'd go for it. Ideally I wouldn't need the stand as I tend to hang them on clips. We'll see. I didn't conclude anything on Massdrop as I got distracted and came away before confirming anything...I'll pop back now.

I'm wondering how we all got away with no duty and VAT (plus the £8 handling charge and can't believe I'd get away with another duty free transaction.
