Underappreciated creams

@longplay - two Spanish offerings - at either end of the scale - you said under the radar and not based on price solely?

Williams Expert Ice Fresh menthol - superb for me. Under two euros in a Spanish supermarket. Punches well above its weight performance-wise, slick and a nice jolt of menthol,

Alvarez y Gomez Barberia - not strictly under the radar but I have never understood why it doesn't enjoy greater prominence - one of the best creams I have - comparable for me with - and better than Xpec and AdP.

cheers - I.

Some products get plenty of press, both the official kind and mentions on learned forums such as this, some regularly fill out top ten lists, but there are plenty of great performers out there that get overlooked.

So what's a top-notch cream that, in your opinion, flies under the radar?

I'd have said things like LEA, Crabtree & Evelyn, Edwin Jagger, Gentlemen's Tonic and even Maca Root all do a great job but rarely get a mention (or not as much as they deserve).

For me, and on reflection I'm quite surprised, the Trumpers shave creams rarely get a mention - the Rose and the Limes are both superb (YMMV) - protective lather, glide, scent and value for money.

I agree that Mem is very underated but it is a bottom shelf product in Israel and not really exported. Quality of lather from the regular version is better than Proraso/Tobs etc'

More underated is Yardley Gold , less than a fiver on ebay

My honest opinion about the Shave Creams; apart from Old Spice shave cream, All the creams are Good. There maybe some exceptions and in my experience it is the Old Spice cream, although you can easily have a decent shave but I find the lather weak compared to rest of the creams I used.

Never mind underappreciated, there's some products in this thread I've never heard of before!

MEM?

Yardley Gold isn't available from the Yardley UK site and you have to get it shipped in from India, what's that all about from a company that's "proudly British"?

Some very good suggestions. I've tried the likes of XPEC, AdP and i Coloniali (the last two call themselves creams but...) and didn't find them to perform better (or at least not to the level you'd expect) over many 'run of the mill' products that don't have anywhere near the fanbase.

Yardley were "acquired" by the Lornamead group (owned by Ugandan born Indians the Jatania brothers) in 2005 who sold the brand name rights in Asia and the Middle East to Wipro. Subsequently nearly every product has been reformulated (read: destroyed) and repackaged beyond all recognition.

MEM shave creams are from Israel. It is very normal that you may not heard of it because they are not marketed outside of Israel. One of the forum member was selling it on this forum and that is how I came across. They make two versions and they are quite different from each other and they perform really good. Sometimes on e-bay you may come across if not they are not available anywhere else, if you know someone living or travelling to Israel may be able to get some.
There are few European and American brands(shaving creams) now being produced in India and Yardley Gold is only one of them and it is very good, other examples are Old Spice shave creams which aren't that good, AXE shaving cream Fantastic scent and performance, Dettol shaving cream I haven't tried it. These are only some of the Western brands that are produced in India, there maybe more.
