Want to try witch hazel, need some directions

I read that only mix containing food grade aloe vera (juice mostly) had to be kept in the fridge. What are the best practices concerning aloe vera conservation?
I use this stuff which requires refrigeration. Obviously aloe vera products containing preservatives may not. I expect that would be indicated on the container.

First shave this morning, the lotion works quite well, although I needed 5 sprays in order to obtain a supple skin. The medicinal odor disperses after 5 minutes. Although it looks like a gel, the preparation is completely liquid. No rash or reaction to the lotion, so I won't add anything else (citric acid, essential oils, etc)

Nothing fancy for me. I use Boots Distilled Witchazel at a few quid a bottle and dab it on with cotton wool if I have any burn or irritation. I also buy their witchazel/glycerin gel to apply to any razor bumps. Using it too much tends to dry my skin out though. The balm I use (bluebeard's Revenge) has both aloe vera and witchazel too and is great to get rid of blemishes too though it stings a bit on application as contains alcohol.

Some feedback:
After using witch hazel/aloe vera homemade ASL for a little while now, I can say that it works pretty good. However, the amount of product has to be high enough to avoid taut skin (5 sprays for me); after a few seconds, I still feel the urge to apply an alcoholic ASL (it might be psychological like a Pavlovian reflex) and/or AS balm.
So, for some reason, my the combination for me is to use all AS product together.

Edit: oddly enough, when I solely use AS balm, I don't need alcoholic AS...

I still use an a/s splash & sometimes a balm over the top.
When I finish my last pass, cold water splash, a light pat with a towel & I spritz the fizzog with witch hazel. It dries in while I clean up the sink & wash out the brush.
It definitely improves my skin condition in particular there are a couple of soaps that gave a little tingle & witch hazel sorts it.

Its a low cost tweak to anyone's shaving routine & certainly works for me, glad that it works for you too.

I use a balm of some sort daily, and I like to use a different lotion each day. Among these are Thayers and Humphreys Witch Hazels, and there is a considerable difference between the two. Thayers is pure distilled witch hazel, as is Humphreys, but the latter also has 14% alcohol content.
I tend towards the Humphreys, as I do like a little "bite" in a lotion when it hits the skin.

Do they? I thought they were all alcohol-free.
The one I like most of all is the Rose Petal, which I think is available only as alcohol-free. I could always spike it with vodka or gin, I suppose.
,Thayers Original has alcohol , for a moment I thought I was going mad!

No , I am mistaken, I just had a look and can not find any with alcohol although I'm sure they did once. So I'm sorry for my misinformation , my bad!
Thayers original witch hazel astringent contains 10% alcohol ..I knew I had seen one with alcohol, so if you want alcohol in your Thayers the Original is the one to go for :) There is also Thayers after shave witch hazel that also contains alcohol .

I've not had much success with alcohol-free witch hazel. I have a bottle of Thayers Rose Petal and Aloe Vera witch hazel sitting in the back of my bathroom cupboard, but I find it ineffective as an aftershave because it's alcohol-free. I did trying experimenting by adding alcohol to some of it, but the results were unimpressive. I'll leave the witch hazel to my wife and keep some aloe vera gel on hand to treat my sunburn.

It's ineffective because it's primarily water, not witch hazel extract.
