PAA The Beach Aftershave Balm...the soap is awesome, incredible scent...looking forward to this arriving!
It doesn't surprise me, there has always been a lot of quality engineering in Hamburg, with it being a harbour city and all.I absolutely know that GuitarTech! It's good to be corrected! Life would be boring if I was right all of the time! After a bit of rooting around, it seems that Solingen is entirely out of the picture and that it would have been using Sheffield steel and ground in Hamburg by Friedrich Ern or similar. Gives it a dating of circa 1887-1910.
I was going on the word of the seller. I, for example, don't know whether a razor may have been ground in one place and assembled in another so could be 'made' in two different places. If forging the steel counts as part of the 'making' process, could it be 'made' in three different places?
Very interesting all the same and thanks for giving me a reason to research this! If you hadn't, I would never have known!
P.s. do you play guitar? I have been playing for about 12 years now and absolutely love it!
Received the razor today - obviously had some misunderstanding with the seller. The razor is actually a Niazi 6/8, hand-forged, silver steel, made in Solingen. Black horn scales which have been re-rivited. Some slight patina and pitting but honed and stropped and looks great. I'll post up a picture when I get the opportunity! It doesn't surprise me, there has always been a lot of quality engineering in Hamburg, with it being a harbour city and all.
As to the guitar playing, well, sort of. I don't gig any more these days, apart from an occasional job just for fun. I spend more time building and repairing guitars and basses for people who can often play far better than me: http://www.myers-guitars.com/english/home/
Update: Saponificio Varesino Monoi de Tahiti Butter - pre shave treatment from The Shave Station. Just arrived. Couldn't wait to try because of the promise of frangipani infusion. Had grown up with these trees in the garden that give off a lovely fragrance especially in the evening or after heavy rain. WORST EVER PRE SHAVE TREATMENT!! DO NOT BUY. Not only did it not smell of frangipani, it actually did not smell of anything except oil!! Yes, it smelt of oil! The promise of crushed frangipani is absolute horse manure. At £11.50 an absolute waste of money so please beware. It's a semi solid butter, it melts on application or in your hands, and is a good Pre-Shave oil. But you can get any Shea butter to apply as a pre shave treatment for much much less. Real disappointment. Sorry guys!
Some razors(pre-war) Kropp and Gotta as an Example can be like this because the steel is Sheffield and the Razor is finished in Germany. Germany had a very good reputation and technology at hollow grinding razors.Make up your mind, Hamburg and Solingen are a long way apart .... or am I being a fool (not unknown ), and is there a part of Solingen that's called Hamburg?
To shed light on this there was some miscommunication between myself and the seller. The razor is a Niazi ~1908, looks 5/8 rather than 6/8 and mows hair like a beast. Made in solingen by Carl Friedrich Ern from Sheffield Steel there's a couple of pictures in the Lurker thread on the straight razor area of the forumsSome razors(pre-war) Kropp and Gotta as an Example can be like this because the steel is Sheffield and the Razor is finished in Germany. The thing I don't understand how can it be half hollow and then extra hollow profile?? never heard that before. A razor can be either Wedge or 1/2 hollow or 1/4 hollow grind or Full hollow, Extra hollow, double hollow , whole hollow are same.
