How to protect brass?

I asked SWMBO how to clean brass and she said to stick them in the washing machine.

Most brass door furniture (including external) that is sold is coated nowadays. It certainly helps in keeping it pristine although I've no idea what the coating is. However, when you consider that door knobs, knockers and letter boxes take a lot of handling, it must work.

Let it patina, as long as you clean it and dry it after use it should stay shiny and get a nice colour to it.

Try renaissance wax just a small amount rubbed on puts a protective layer that stops the oxidation that causes the discolouration,it's completely invisible,I use it on straight razors as a protective coating to stop corrosion it doesn't even seem to wash off under a hot tap give it a go.
