I'm relatively, ok no completely new to using shaving soaps I have only used the tobs shave creams and have recently been given the proraso shaving soap and am having problems getting a good lather of this can people give me tips on where I may be going wrong I am using a super badger brush and am attempting to face lather. Second question is can people recommend a good hard soap that I can purchase as a second one? All help much appreciated!

I don't face lather, never have done, i prefer to make mine in a bowl, and i find Proraso very easy to Bowl Lather...

perhaps you should practice bowl lathering with it to get good technique.....also have a look below for some general Lathering advice

Cheers thanks for that I have tried now and have no problem getting an amazing lather in a bowl! So is this as this soap is not best suited to fax lathering? Or is it my technique?
And recommendation on other hard soaps?

Hiya, I use proraso green as my weekday morning shaving soap and face lather it every day, so it definitely can work. I use a Kent BK2 brush, which is best badger so possibly has a bit more backbone (as I understand it, super is softer than best) and that might help.

I make sure the brush is really well soaked (left in the water for a couple of minutes) and then give it a slight squeeze - but still leaving plenty of water in the brush. Then swirl for a good 30 seconds to a minute to make sure there is a lot of soap on the brush. There will probably be plenty of loose foam in the bowl by now, so I also try a final swirl to load as much of that as possible.

Then it's onto the face - swirling actions, a bit scrubby, all over until the lather begins to thicken up. Then paint it over to even out the spread. Job's a good un!

For second soaps, I have DR Harris Marlborough. It smells nice and is a decent performer, but not as good as Proraso for the actual shave. Palmolive sticks at 50p are worth a go too! I've been meaning to try MWF but I would avoid that until your technique is reliable with other soaps as I've heard it's tough to get right.

Cheers
Stu
