Rubberset Re-Furb Opinions

What to do ?

I got this sorry old Rubberset as a re-furb project.

It's getting there as far as the cracks are concerned, but I am a little undecided as to what to do knot wise.

The original knot is bristle, in good condition, but unbelivably harsh. It has the consistancy of a bass broom ! I could never use it, that's for sure.

So, should I leave it in original condition, or opt to replace the knot and get some use out of it ?

Original Boar, 48mm Loft

Silvertip, 21mm, 48mm Loft

I do not really have room for a "display", so I'm leaning towards making a user out of it.

What does the team think ?

I have always liked that shape, I also like the contrast between wood and arcylic, it's something I would like to see more modern brush makers using more, I put in a few bids a while back on one from the USA on the Bay, didn't win though, that was very simular to yours fully restored.

I'm trying to find some old handle to have a crack at restoration

I would put in a new knot. Then replace the vulcanized rubber upper with a turned piece of African blackwood, or delrin (or ebonite). Then probably put a nicer beech underside on it....

I went for the Silvertip in the end, as I decided that I wanted to use the brush:icon_rolleyes:

Post bloom :

I wanted to preserve the base detail, so it only had a coat of varnish over what was originally there.

For scale with a FS 28mm Silvertip

And with other hairy friends.

First outing is planned for Saturday
