I have been looking at the EJ bowls, this one in particular.....

I am worried it might be a bit small to mix cream in, I think its normally used to fit their soaps at 6cm in diameter.

Any advice as I have only mixed in a cereal bowl.

I've got one of those bowls, they're very pretty but as you rightly assume, they're a little bit small for actual lathering and I found the lather spills over the edge too easily. The other downside is that I was always scared to death of dropping it.. I had a few close calls and it now just sits on my shaving shelf looking nice, but unused.

I switched to a terracotta tapas dish after a while which was much wider, and holds plenty of lather for 3 passes when needed.

As well as size, when looking for a shaving bowl I'd also be mindfull of the angle of the sides. Too steep and you'll have a load of brush clatter.

A charity shop is a useful place to find something that works well as a shaving bowl as well as places like Ikea.
A good size bowl makes a lot of difference to ease and containment of lathering. I have two purpose made pottery bowls. One is 13cm x 5.5cm deep. The other 11x5. The larger bowl is so much better to use.

This is my larger bowl:

TK Max as some good choices I picked a perfect little bowl in a good quality grade of plastic by Jamie Oliver, yeah I know it's for food prep, but I find it ideal good depth just the right angle on bowl sides with matt exterior and high gloss interior, and all for the princely sum of £1.50.

That Tk Max bought bowl looks ideal, but just wondering if it's easier to create a lather if the surface is a little less smooth e.g. An unglazed interior ceramic bowl versus a glazed one?

How do you find the TK Max bought bowl? Wondering what the diameter size is? I face lather with cream at the moment but would like to try out bowl lathering with hard shave soaps for greater variety (although I am greatly liking The Bluebeards Revenge shaving cream).

Thanks,
Jason

Some think so. I'm in the "no" camp though, I've used several different smooth glazed bowls and they have all produced fine lather... I've never noticed better results from rougher surfaces. The brush should do all of the aerating you need.
