A Question for the Honemeisters....

Evening all,

I have a question for the hone meisters. I've acquired a selection of “vintage” straight razors of variable quality and states of readiness. Would any of our esteemed specialists be prepared to assess my purchases and let me know which if any are suitable for cleaning up and honing to make them shave ready and which I should just scrap?

Obviously I expect to pay for the assessment and any works carried out.....

Thats a Personal Question...I have Honed Many SRs for Folks that I Would Personally Scrap in the Bin...I Am in the Process of Moving House at the Moment & My Honing Gear is in Store for Transit..So Honing SRs for Folks is Temporally Out for Me at the Moment

I have some right old dogs...a Crown and Sword that shaves great, a couple of Bengalls, also good shavers and a few more beaten up pitted and watermarked blades...they all shave great, I would only get rid of a blade that either has deep pitting near the edge, cracked or split blade, or some major deformity that may be dangerous. I have a few nice blades too but I dont keep them seperate from the old dogs...TBH on shave day I dont know what im using until I open a drawer and pick a razor...the old ones get more than their fair share of use, I prefer vintage blades, I just like the history behind them and they shave as well or even better than some modern razors. I got a Bengall for £4 and it is clean and straight and takes a incredible edge....same with KROPP blades, you can pick them up cheap and they take a great edge too...doesnt always have to be a TI or filli or Henckles to give a good shave. Why not put some fotos up to let us see and maybe get a better idea of what is what...scales are easily replaced so dont worry about that.

Sorry for the delay in replying...... Life got in the way! Gastroscope and a broken toe all in the same week!

the first (came with the 3 razor leather case) I think is beyond redemption I think and the one with blue scales is new. I particularly like the Brosem which I think is a travel razor, the B&S and the Veldawerk 1046. That said I also like the John Clarke & Sons Neva, Kropp and the SBRO in the leather case.... Damn it I like them all otherwise I wouldn't have bought them!..

I'd agree about the first one, damaged scales and that chip in the blade pretty much make it not worth the effort, in my opinion Kropps are excellent shavers and if it just needs a good polish then i'd definitely keep it. It's hard to tell from the photos but is there a small chip in the edge of the Kropp?

The others all look like nice razors and i'd get them all honed as and when i could afford it, or invest in some stones and start learning to hone.

Having double checked it the Kropp is in tact, its just a dirty mark. I'm no polishing expert but the surface is ok and I think it would come up well with the right attention. With regard to the photos (that's) what get for relying on an iPad!

Next time I‘ll take photos with a camera!

If the scales were being replaced on the first one wouldnt it be worth seeing if the end could be ground down and then put shorter scales on it to salvage it? The rest look like they might clean up and be okay with a good honing... Just my .02
