Thanks in advance.

Had a look online - including Mr Razor.com. Saw lots of similar, if not identical heads, but none of the handles matched.

Handle's 75mm / 3" long and quite slim with diamond pattern. Handle feels quite heavy (41 grams). The bottom plate of the head feels like aluminium and weighs 3.1 grams. The top cap feels heavy (14.9 grams) and I wouldn't like to say if it's Zamak or chromed brass or aluminium - it's all very shiny.

As mentioned it all polishes up nicely although clearly it's not worth much. And I've always fancied a Tech of one sort or another. Haven't used it yet ... only received it today.

It was passed to me by Andy, the bloke who did the old fellas shaving at a care home but has now moved "up t'north" and can't do it any more.

The top cap has "Gillette" etched on it, along with the right facing arrow. It has "Made in England stamped in the bottom right corner and the word Gillette plus the triangle and arrow in the bottom left corner.

EDIT. Have just found out where it might have came from so will make enquiries there too.

Is it an Aluminium Ball End Tech?

Thanks.

Me again! :p

Looking at these better pictures I would say its a 'Frankenrazor' - Gillette Tech head, aluminium base plate with zamak or brass top cap and it appears to be mounted onto a Merkur 1904 handle which is entirely zamak itself (a chap in the US attempted to tap the thread assuming it was brass - big mistake!) The handle actually matches your other head and it then becomes a Merkur 42C.

Ah... now it's falling into place. You're ringing bells. I'm so very grateful. Yes, 1904 rings a bell now.... Top man!

I just this minute used it... the 1904 handle with the Tech head. With a new Voskhod blade. Remarkably undramatic. Reasonably close and perfectly comfortable after multiple passes. Would think it's difficult to cut yourself with it.

I also received this head in the same parcel ... here ......

Is it thought, then, that this head, shown here, is a Merkur? If so perhaps, as was suggested, the top that, when paired with the head in my piccies makews it the 42C? Does the Merkur head (on it's own) have a name? I have to say the finish on the head above is dreadful.

Anyway, thanks very much.

It seems fairly likely the head and handle go together to make a Merkur 42c. Merkurs quality control has been on the decline in recent years, I've had to return a couple of their razors to venders due to factory defects... I've seen it implied elsewhere that many of their razors might actually be produced in China and merely packed in Germany but there is no proof and the video evidence used to refute it is about 15 years old.

All received. Indeed, I think we can say 42C with some certainty. And the Tech base plate is whatever it is... obviously UK but can't see any way to date it ... and the top cap could be brass or Zamak ... not going to cut it in half to find out.

Further thanks.

I would be amazed if that actually was a Merkur head, their finishing is not on a par with MÜHLE but it's better than that. That looks awful!

Yes, you're right. The handle is def. a 1904 Merkur and the head will have to remain unidentified (and certainly not the best). Ta.
