Best razor and blade combination ?

#1
I've got 3 double edge razors, and for each of them I use a different blade.
The best blade for one is not the best blade for another, but there are many blades I haven't tried.

Personally, my beard is quite tough and this is what I use ...
Parker Variant Adjustable - best blade = Derby Premium - excellent combination
Edwin Jagger DE89 - best blade = Astra Superior Platinum - ok combination
Parker Connaught 60R - best blade = Feather - ok combination

The Parker Variant Adjustable with the Derby Premium feels far superior to the other two combinations. That's not necessarily because of the adjustment, but probably because it is very solid - it holds the blade firmly. That's the way I see it.

I'm not planning to buy any more razors, but I'm happy to try different blades if people think there is a blade that works better with any of the 3 razors above.

There must be some blades that work better ... please let me know if you have found something that works really well

What you need to do is get a blade selection pack because what may work for me in any of the given razors may not work for you. I can say Nancets, rubies, Perma sharp and polsilvers are good blades to try in your razors. P.

I have Merkur progres which is similar to Parker and find that Astra so, voskhod, Treet carbon, rapira swedish supersteel work like charm in it. Also my all-around blades that work in almost every razor are Gillette silver blue, polsilver and rapira platinum lux.

I find the complete opposite with the Astra in the DE89, absolutely awful. I find a Pol Silver works in anything.

As others have said get a sampler pack, possibly consider a wider selection than usual. www.razorbladesclub.com has a massive selection of blades.

Same here. Despite using Astra SP for a month solid in my DE89 whilst learning DE technique, it has now been left behind by other blades. Top 3 to date are Gillette Nacet, Silver Blue & Polsilver SI

I also recommend the eBay seller uk-de-blades. Loads of sample tucks and you pay 99p for postage regardless of how many you buy.

I’ve tried 5 or so blades and am now onto another batch of 5 different ones. The advantage of that eBay seller is you can effectively hand pick your own sampler pack, as you may not want all the blades in the sampler packs from the popular shaving sites as you may for example have already tried some of them

I honestly can't tell much of a difference between brands or even coatings. Only differences I consistently detect are blade to blade differences, if one has a burr on the edge so it feels a bit harsh on first use. Some blades can be a dud and quickly get binned. Some blades last longer, some not, again feels irrelevant of brand.

Prep, mental state and technique are 95% of the good shave for me. I can't get a BBS during daily shaving with Fatip OC + Feather, while I can get it easy with an Astra SP on its 3rd use in a mild Tech head razor if I shave 4 days apart.

I wholeheartedly agree with Gillette Nacet, as @Blademonkey initially said. They're my go-to blade for whichever razor I choose, especially (when I owned it) the Parker Variant. I don't exactly recall the last time I used anything other than a Nacet... I might change things up with my next shave. :)

Voskhods are decent, as are Rapira blades in my experience, with my favour lying more with the Rapira Stainless (pink packet). Polsilvers are a little softer than Nacets in terms of cutting ability but a very worthwhile blade to try out. Similarly, Gillette have a good selection including Silver Blue and Rubie.

Astra SP are not a bad blade by any stretch, however! :)

Thanks all for the tips.
I have to say that by and large, every razor (within reason) works with different blades ... so find workable combinations then select from the possible combination to suit the face. Since my first post, I saw that the Polsilver Super Iridium was popular. Tried it today for the first time and it seems excellent in my Parker Connaught 60R.

Unfortunately, it appears the Polsilver Super Iridium is being discontinued so I'll still need to find something else (probably).

I prefer to start with recommendations, because I've tried too many blades which are dreadful.

As prep was mentioned, I find shaving is best a) after a shower b) after applying shampoo/conditioner to my beard c) after applying shaving cream with a brush d) shaving e) repeating d and e twice more in different directions ...

BUT, if the razor / blade combination is no good, then the result is also no good !

I have tried about 20 different blades on my De 89. Until recently the 7 o'clock yellow and perma sharp gave me the best shave until I picked up a tuck of Nacet.

I will probably never need to try another blade again brilliant smooth shave.

When I try a new blade I see how many shaves I get out of it, normally 5 so after 4 I bin it. The nacet gave me 8 which is a record for me.

Need to give them a go in the R41 next.

Thanks All - I'm now very happy with 2 of my combinations ...
Parker Variant Adjustable - best blade = Derby Premium - excellent combination
Parker Connaught 60R - best blade = Polsilver Super Iridium - excellent combination

Edwin Jagger DE89 - best blade = I've given up on this ...

At some point I will try Nacet as it has a lot of support, but now I've got enough stock to last me years !
