Good luck Shaun, that rust appears pretty thick in places... Can you not give it a cheeky dremal or something on those really bad spots? I have read of using sand paper wrapped around a cork as a good manual method for the blade itself but have never tried it.

Unfortunately I don't have a Dremel, I'm using wet & dry lubed with WD40 on a cork. Cheers, it's a mission for sure
 
If it's any help I find rubbing compound for car body work very good at getting rid of rust and such , it's very mildly abrasive and works very well with plenty elbow grease
