MÃœHLE / Fibre Innovation

I must say that I first approached synthetic brushes with a high degree of scepticism until about a year ago when I purchased a Muhle 23mm large silvertip synthetic. I figured that since the brush did not cost an arm and a leg I wouldn't be annoyed if I didn't like it. I was very impressed with the Muhle from my first shave and continue to be impressed with it still. It is now my one and only travel brush. Prior to the Muhle I'd tried a Simpson Classic1 first gen. synthetic, which I find unusable because it is very difficult to splay, and a Kent Silvertex, which I find quite satisfactory, but not on a par with my Muhle. Is it possible to purchase Muhle synthetic knots alone? If so I'd buy and re-knot my Classic1 with it.

Greetings

I now own the smallest and the largest of the V2 Muhle synthetics and I really like them both probably the small one slightly more than the XL model as it splays just a little bit easier. I purchased them both from members of this forum.

I have to say though that I still prefer the RazoRock Plissoft 24mm knot over either of my 2 Muhles, the knot tips are softer and the knot splays easier, I also love the original L'Occitane Plisson brush although many find it splays too easily. One regularly reads the term "floppy" in respect of the Plisson knot I have yet to find any synthetic brush that is floppy; to my mind the two terms just do not go together, the Plisson knot is much more pliable and bends easier but can never be called floppy.

It is a hard fact that the Muhle brushes are better made than the RazoRock brushes with superior handles and more carefully constructed 'neater' knots but with a price tag that is over double they ought to be!

Regards
Dick.

Before you plunk down any money I shall offer a bit of advice based upon my experience with the both the MÜHLE "silvertip" & "black fibre" brushes as I have both. Quite simply, for a lot less money buy a Plissoft as they work just as well for less dinero IMO. The "silvertip" may be just a frog hair better with creams, but I almost always use soaps anyway. Just my 2 cents from having owned the two MÜHLE brushes since 2014.

He's right about the soaps vs creams. As I use mostly creams, the synths work just fine. If I do use a soap, I return to the trusted badger.

I've got quite a reasonable collection of synthetics:
  • 19mm Muhle Silvertip
  • 20mm Muhle Black Fibre
  • 23mm EJ Silvertip
  • 24mm Maggard Plissoft
  • 24mm Whipped Dog Ubersoft
  • 25mm EJ Silvertip
  • 26mm Crown King Plissoft
  • 27mm Zenith (possibly EJ / Muhle silvertip)
It's probably stating the obvious, but the whole package - loft, density, fibre, handle etc, drives performance rather than just one such as fibre. As an example the EJ 25mm in my opinion is superior to the EJ 23mm due to both loft and density. Overall I would rate the EJ 25mm as being the best of the bunch (a great all rounder), but either of 24mm brushes mentioned above are but a frogs hair behind in terms of performance imho.

Bingo! ;)

I want this 26mm one:

I have the 24mm version & this particular handle style is the bee's knees. ;)

I have to admit I have struggled to find a comfortable 26mm handle. I would be very curious to know what the handle diameter is?

This one is similar and again scores very well for me on the ergonomic front: http://www.whippeddog.com/products/view/24mm-tall-brush-options

I am ashamed to admit that I am in the same state as he and have never bought anything from him. I contacted him once and he's a great guy.

I measured my "Bruce" handled 24mm brush for you with calipers. The handle is exactly 2" long. The bottom handle "swell" is 1.470" width as is the top "swell" respectively. The 26mm brush is 6mm taller overall per their webpage.

Thanks for that. I will add the 'Bruce' to the shopping list

I just ordered a Muhle Silvertip Fibre V2 knot from Shavingie. I'll replace the dreadful synthetic knot in my prototype Simpson Classic1 Synthetic with it; I really like the faux Ivory handle on this brush so I want to keep it. It cost me a total of €22 including shipping, which is a bit on the rich side, but I do like the Muhle synthetic fibre and I believe the V2 fibre is even better than the V1 fibre brush I have now. I will replace the knot myself, which is a first for me.

I ordered a 23mm Classic MÜHLE yesterday from Connaught's as they are clearing everything MÜHLE with a 20% reduction. I did have the 25mm but found that a tad too big, so maybe I will have found the ideal size.
