It's the newer incarnation... can't remember what year it became tamer ... was it 2011 or 2013?

Had it several years and it gets reasonably regular use.

Today it refused to tighten up securely on to its own handle. I imagine I must have unwittingly been careless and crossed it.

Slightly strange thing is the head does mate with a stainless handle and a stainless head does mate with the (zamak) R41 handle.... (but admittedly it's quite a loose fit).

I'm guessing the softness of the metal of both handle and head combine to prevent it tightening up now and both components are worn.

You can get a new R41 head delivered for £19 but I had a look on BST on the off-chance but can't see an R41 head there.

If anyone has a head that they're not using any more let me know.

Design flaw with this razor, been through 3 myself in the past, all snapped off no matter how careful I have been.
Its a great razor but my fourth rarley gets out now, The General has full command.

I cannot fathom why they don't make the damn thing entirely out of solid alloys and charge a tad more instead of using zamak crap. I remember when German engineers were smart. I must be getting old.

They can use brass threaded insert in a zamak handle and make the top plate and thread from brass/copper. Keep the bottom plate (more complicated geometry) from zamak. That's how the German bakelite slants were done back in the day (see PAA Bakelite, clone of Fasan No.1).

But even then, eventually the zamak plating will fail and water will quickly deteriorate the alloy. It doesn't make it drop proof either.

I will check & see if I have an original or V2......

I do have some top caps in my seconds tray, some at 19.18, 20.18 & 20.32. I think the 19.18 is the Original R41, the 20.18 is the R89 & the 20.32 is what my current R41 stock measures.

Very many thanks for all the above. Much appreciated. Didn't realise it was quite so prone to problems.

UPDATE.

Muhle have asked for it back and will replace it. Great service from them.

And thanks for the assistance here too. Appreciated.

When I tried to call them yesterday, yesterday, the Muhle UK phones weren't working. As I couldn't make contact I sent a note to Muhle Head Office in Europe instead. In the meantime the phones came back and all was back to normal and they (the UK office) sorted me out a treat (thank you again, Muhle UK).

This morning I had a reply from Muhle in Europe. A really helpful and comprehensive rely just asking for a photo of the dodgy top cap and promising to send a new one out (the newer brass screw jobbie).

What refreshingly good service, eh?

That's good ol' reliable German customer service.

I asked Fatip to buy a top cap from them because the one on my Testina Gentile had its gold finish chipping after couple of uses. Obviously a dud because the Grande has zero issues with its finish after hundreds of shaves. They told me they will replace the whole razor and then they just ignored me. That's how Italians do customer service. Loving it.

Surprised it did not fall apart as soon as you took it out of the packaging.

Tell me why you thought it likely to fall apart so soon?

The impression I gained over time was that the QC was a bit iffy when it came to finishing off and the blade alignment could be hit and miss [slightly more concerning], but that most people forgave those drawbacks given that it's as cheap as chips and performed rather well, most of the time.

But, remember, I haven't (yet?) bought one so am not speaking from a position of authority here.

In fact, when have I ever spoken from ..... etc etc ?

It was supposed to be a joke on the fact that he said it was Italian and the stereotype that Italian products look nice, but are unreliable and poorly built e.g. the association with Italian cars years ago.

Yep style over substance. At one point if your bought a brand new Alfa Romeo there was a good chance you would be calling the dealer back before you even got home as the gearbox would be knackered.
