Name a typical old geezer scent

re samples: Lalique Encre Noire À L'Extrême Eau de Parfum for Men (spray), read over at Fragrantica: "massive performance after only three sprays" "dark" "rugged and untamed" but I say well maybe if you are in a boy band.

re samples: John Varvatos Oud (dip stick), this is not a warm but rather sour and bitter oud and if you are known as "That Cologne Guy" at the office this is not for you because scent sits rather close to skin.

edit: of samples so far this is the first miss according to my nose

re samples: Penhaligon's Sartorial (spray), supposed to smell like a visit to a tailor's workskhop on Savile Row, cannot comment on that because I am not the bespoke type, so this is not my scent but it is well made and interesting, getting a dry metallic note, manly, yes but more metro than macho and best suited for a reserved persona.

edit: wife likes it on me

edit2: Sartorial Notes according to Fragrantica are "aldehydes, ozonic effect, metallic effect, violet leaf, neroli, cardamom, black pepper, fresh ginger, beeswax, cyclamen, linden blossom, lavender, leather, gurjum wood, patchouli, myrrh, cedar wood, tonka bean, oakmoss, white musk, honey effect, old wood effect, vanilla, amber"
I missed all except metallic...homer.png

re samples: Alexandre J The Collection Black Muscs (spray), a free sample added to my order by Notino, unisex, to my nose a generic teenage girls at the mall scent so it is not for me.

edit: washed arm, binned sample

True story; my brother (a fellow member of the Handlebar Mustache Club) won a competition a couple of years ago and the prize was 12 x 100ml bottles of his choice from Penhaligons.

He gave me a bottle of Sartorial.

Anyroad, I enjoyed it. Hardly surprising as it's very much a fougere in style. Like some of the big hitters from the 80s.

Wouldn't surprise me if this was in their recipe books 30 years ago when they only six fragrances for men.

Not like nowadays when they're banging out 3 or 4 a year.

re samples: Bvlgari Man in Black (dip stick), first blast, Nah! but it soon settles down to a scent my nose is enjoying, I get fancy store selling designer furniture in leather and wood, with spices and flowers adding a warm comforting feeling, too bad dry down is a let down as Wow! in a rather hurried way transforms to Meh!

By the way: I wish all samples would be spray vials instead of dip stick making it easier to mimic normal dosage from a full bottle

re samples: Baldessarini Ambre (dip stick), Italian? No! brand is German, first hit from this stuff is supposed to smell like whisky and red apples but I am clueless so happy to move on to the following warm amber scent with a subtle sharp note added, it is not loud if that is what you want, longivity not the greatest either, all in all more Oomph! would have been nice for this autumn/winter/evening scent.

edit: I have tested over and over again reapplying and no whisky detected. My nose is maybe way off or maybe reviewers over at Fragrantica are clueless not having reached drinking age :)

That's been on my radar for a while. Always gets mentioned as an 80s powerhouse. I will get round to trying it soon.

My father used to wear this back in those days. The bottle matched the brown furniture in the bathroom!

I secured him a small (5ml or 7ml) vintage bottle for a birthday a year or so ago. He told me it was indeed VERY strong. Mum told him not to wear it again. That era was gone.

So, yes. Powerhouse '80s and every bit deserving of its reputation.

Balenciaga Portos is one in my cabinet that I'm not allowed to wear. I bought it in memory of my old cat Porthos. He wasn't particularly good at using the toilet and would often be somewhat whiffy. The bottle of Cologne was every bit the reminder! Pongy mog! I'm banned from wearing that one, but would happily do so.

I had an evening of Man in Black last week and my wife said it had the scent of an old ladies perfume. I rather like it myself even if it smells dry if there is such a description for a scent.

Funny, my wife commented: "Old aunt", but this happens every now and then with scents I like and would definitely call manly.

re samples: Van Cleef & Arpels Pour Homme (dip stick), introduced in 1978, this reminds me of the Leonard Pour Homme I tried back in the day, leather, lavender, carnation, patchouli, vetiver, oakmoss, musk, it is old but not a typical powerhouse, way back then I soon moved on to Azzaro - better and finally Antaeus - the best.

In France, old geezers (60+) often wear eau de cologne (4%-6% alcohol) that are sold in supermarket for €4-5/250ml. They usually have a very clean unisex scent (very office safe) and can be used as an after shave lotion as well (last 30mn to 1 hour max). The most classical ones are those:
